Do not apply right now. It will be a total waste of money. Wait for your CK result to come in before applying do not take it and FAIL only take it when u are ready. $3000 down the toilet is what you are facing so do not apply right now. Your only shot is with the PD at your program. Man i know how u feel.

Look u really need to take a very hard look at your dream for Sx. If u take CK and pass before the match (Nov 1st is not important) u may have a shot at scrambling into a prelim Sx. But the 2010 scramble was horrible. Dude Sx is not going to look at u if u do not break 90. If your PD makes some phone calls for you u may have a rare chance. Thats the hard truth.

many have been in your seat and do not ignore this. Private message me if u have any more questions.

Take your time and DESTROY CK thats your only hope. U can get into a program that u do not want and a field u do not want like FP/IM then later get into Sx ...u have a really long road man.

I don't want to sound harsh... but you have NO SHOT at surgery.
Aim for FM, Peds, OB, or lower tier IM.

If i was you, I would do OB. It's a surgical specialty.

Hey, it's the internet, innit? EVERYBODY's an expert.

(FWIW, from what I understand, the former is currently applying for the match, the latter is already a resident... so yeah, they prolly know something.)

The numbers I'm seeing here and elsewhere say that they are probably correct. Surgery is not looking super-duper likely, and obstetrics was tough last year. That is not to say that you shouldn't try, if you are bound and determined to do so, and you have some connections, but you need to be realistic about it.

Frankly, I think that applying this late with a CK failure would not be doing yourself any favors... but I am decidedly not an expert, and it is just my opinion. In your moccasins, I'd probably bust my tail on CK and CS and Step 3, do some additional observations and/or research, and apply next year on September 1st. But that's just me.

    I wish you well.

I am by no means an expert...

however, I know how to interpret stats and read... and an 82 is significantly below the average for surgery. Having a step fail makes it nearly impossible for the OP to match into surgery. There are exceptions to EVERY RULE! but I speak in generalities.

IMO, ob is attainable unless things change in the next few years. Ob, FM, and peds are always in a tussle for least competitive. It is what it is...

I think if you apply to surgery, unless you have a solid connection, you will be throwing your money away. I would spend that money and apply to as many OB and Fm programs you can afford.

Hey, 'roses, with your current count of interviews, you count as an expert in my book. I'm just saying...

you think OB is in the same competitive breath as FM????

you DO realize that in the last 3 yrs, that there have only been 2-4 unfilled spots per yr in OB, right?

OB for many is the backdoor to gen surg...since that is a bit more compeittive...and one word...urogyn...backdoor to urology (and THAT is uber competitive...)...

Yeah, now that I think about it, I haven't heard that Obstetrics was uncompetitive at all -- especially lately. The "Not-Virchow's Triad of Non-Competitiveness" that I always seem to read about is Family Medicine + Pediatrics + Psychiatry, with community-based Internal Medicine as another possibility.
