    Chances of getting residency

    Advertisements

    Hi Guys,
I am an old IMG, graduated in 1986 and worked as a family physician with Obg gyn practice continuously for 14 years in my home country. I am in th USA since last 7 years from 2003. I have finished USMLE steps with scores -step 1--88,step 2--85, step-3 --86. I have passed step 1 and 3 in second attempts. I have worked in Cardiology research in Emory for 1 yr simultaneously working since last 3 years in Primary care center of Internal medicine and family medicine as a Physician Assistant(I dont have Physician assistant degree but with my previous experience, got this opportunity to work here). I am ecfmg certified in 2005 and trying to get the residency position in Internal medicine and Family Medicine. I am applying since last 4 years but not getting any chance. I am on H1 B Visa. Also I am working parttime in Healthcare technology(EMR AND PHR-Electronic medical records) too. So can any body suggest me what should I do? what are the chances of getting the residency. I have very good personal statment and resume and very good letters of Recommondations from USA Physicians too. Please anybody can guide me?

Sadly, there are thousands of Physicians in your predicament. Just look at the number of those that went unmatched this year. Pray that the new health care bill funds thousands of new residencies.

It's going to really hurt you that you are a non-citizen with a visa as well as having 2nd attempts on Step 1 and Step 3. I will tell you that a lot of residencies will filter applications based on both of these criteria w/o even taking a look at the rest of your application. One place I interviewed at had about 2000 applications. They used these filters to reduce the numbers down. They don't have enough time to look through over a thousand applications.

There is always a chance you could land a residency, but it will be at a dump.
