knowing the likely hood of matching as I/FMG

    Advertisements

when looking at the match list for different caribbean schools, it gives the location and specialty of the residents. i don't know if it is coincidental or what but it seems that there is a trend in specialty and region. although i have not been exposed to all specialties i am very interested in Ob/Gyn. My question is how do you determine if FMGs apply and if so just not chosen for that particular program.

    FMG programs

Some of the foreign schools like SGU have a list of hospitals that our graduates have gotten into in each field. Other schools may also have similar lists that could help. You can use that as a base to see what programs accept foreigners as well as word of mouth as to which programs are FMG friendly.
The way I have been looking for FMG friendly is looking at the website of each individual program and seeing if the list of current residents on staff are from foreign schools because they usually list thename and the medical school they are from. This is a very rough way of looking at it because maybe no foreigner tried applying there or there wasnt a qualified foreigner that applied. If you really like the program there is no harm in trying to apply. If they give you an interview who knows you may be the one that could change their minds about accepting FMGs.

    contacting PDs

Thanks for the info. given that it is difficult to determine if any FMGs applied and just weren't qualified, do you think it is a good idea to e-mail PDs?

    FMG...

I have! I emailed PD's as well as senior residents and asked up front if they consider foreign grads for their program. Better yet you could even call the secretary of the PD and ask him/her. They may not say no directly but if they beat around the bush then you know the answer. If they say yes then no harm in applying and if they do seriously consider foreign grads then they wont beat around the bush.
