How will his scores have any bearing on your advice in acquiring a volunteer research position?

I'm always amazed by how blatantly curious people are on here.

Kabum: have you pinpointed on anything that is preventing you from getting the residency.

Caerus: I think Alfildor was trying to figure out why this person is unable to obtain residency. We all know SCORES are the MOST important thing. Obviously other credentials matter as well.

Kabum: senior member/ moderators can suggest you something if you can fully disclose your situation. What is it about your credentials that prevent you from getting residency. Obviously if you have gotten interviews in the past, then it means you were good enough for the program. What went wrong during the interview and why weren't you ranked high? Share your situation and see if someone can give you their honest opinion.

    Wish you all the best.

I agree, there has to be something on your application that is hindering your interviews (...and you do not need to post it on here if you are not comfortable doing so). With that said, there are ways of still matching. It's good that you are going to do research as that will improve your application. Try to do it at a hospital where you would like to apply for residency. If you know any attendings at US hospitals well enough, ask them about research opportunities. And don't forget, if you are able to work closely with a well known doctor, then make sure you get a Letter of Recommendation from them for next year's match.
As far as the scramble...it is near impossible so I wouldn't get my hopes up too high, BUT, I'd definately give it a try. Wake up early and be prepared for war! You need to call, fax, and ERAS each program. Be very proactive and maybe you'll find something through the match.
Lastly, if things don't go so well with the match, for next year, definately do reseach in the meantime, and take Step 3. Step 3 will boost your application as well (but make sure you study well and pass it!). Make sure that you apply to as many programs as you can afford, and try to target private and rural hospitals, and apply to many different regions. Then, PERSONALLY call each program if you haven't heard from them by the end of November. That, plus research, plus letters of recommendation & Step 3 should give you a better chance at the match next year. Hope all goes well!

research, new ROLs are good, but if you have been getting interviews invites at the very least..could it be your actual interview skills? are you coming off too strong, too nervous, too cocky, too desperate? there are plenty of factors...

best of luck dude. keep at it.

maybe the problem was that the OP was waiting for a phone call when he/she should have been checking his/her email.. interview invites are sent via email not the phone most of the time. so check your email.

I don't know if you were being sarcastic, but I find this a hilarious thought.

Don't lose hope. I went three years and 2 scrambles without matching. IMG 78 and 79 on my scores I had a lot of mistakes I corrected them and learned how to properly apply to residency. You can too.

The United Way sponsors numerous "free clinics" across the country. You can volunteer once a month or more if you are able. I've seen FMG/IMG's at the free clinic help out at; assisting the providers/pharmacists/staff, help translate, draw blood, do lab work, vitals, etc. It's rewarding work and keeps your mind thinking about medicine!

In addition, some program directors include rotations at these free clinics as part of their family medicine residency. I see 2nd and third year residents as well as the program director coming in weekly. No guarantee of securing a residency but good way to make connections and get solid letters of recommendations!
