Once you are in medical school, does shadowing help for residency?

    Advertisements

I was wondering if it is of any benefit to do some shadowing during my breaks?

I know the most important thing is Steps, then recs, then GPA and so forth.

Do residencies care about clinical experience or does it not matter because I'm going to spend 2 years in a hospital later anyways

I have a fair amount of research experience with some publications. Just wanted to know whether residencies care about such things or what else I can do during my breaks to help myself (besides study for Step I) I started this past August at SGU

    Thanks

Um, I wouldn't say it won't matter, period. Do residencies look specifically for shadowing? No.. but that doesn't mean that it won't make a difference in all cases.

You're coming from SGU. You should do anything that may help your application. You may shadow a doc, make a nice connection, and have him/her to help you get an interview spot. Or it may do nothing. If you know a doctor and have the opportunity to shadow, and feel like doing that during your breaks, I say go for it. You never know what may help you in the future. It's not essential, but it could help, depending on who you meet.

I dont think the shadowing matters. I would concentrate in getting great scores and get clinical experience by volunteering in free clinics which has preceptors from your UNI who can act as mentors or early research experience.

shadowing wont have too much of an impact on residency, even if you developed a good relationship with the attending you shadowed, s/he cant really evaluate and write you a LOR on your clinical skills since you are just shadowing
