how hard to match into pathology or radiology?

    Advertisements

Im a student at a caribbean school. got a 210/87 on step 1 first attempt.... pretty low score. I know that my chances of matching into rads with this score and being a FMG are probably slim to none, so don't hold back when answering. Thanks

Haha... lets say I break a 230 on step 2. Would you still say rads is out of the question? Thanks

yes i would. the average step1 score for accepted US med students in 2009 was 238, and step2 score was 242. So even if you got a 230 you'd still be way below the average accepted applicant. To make up for your poor step1 score you'll need a 250+, but even that could easily not help because many programs set filters at 220 or higher for step1 score so they wouldn't even see your 250 step2 score because you'd automatically be rejected.

on second look you'll even have a tough time matching into pathology, because the average step1 score for accepted applicants in 2009 was 227 and step2 230. so you're even below average for pathology, which i thought was an easy specialty to get into but i guess is gaining popularity.

I got a 227/95 on step1 and 231/95 on step2 and i didn't waste my time with rads. also the way the match is looking pretty soon (in 3 or 4 years) it will be impossible for foreigners to get any residency, because the number of US grads is increasing and the number of residencies is more or less staying the same. Residencies first go to US med students and then DO's and then FMGs/IMGs... if you also need a visa then pretty soon you'll be lucky to get any residency at all.

sorry, i didn't mean to be negative. i think you should be realistic and know what you can and can't get. some who are more optimistic will say this is your dream, you only get one chance so might as well do everything you can and thus apply everywhere you can. i have a friend who applied to every single neuro residency, even harvard and Duke and all those super top notch places. I think it's a waste of money he says why not go for it you never know what can happen.

so good luck maybe you'll end up dating a radiology Program Director's daughter/son and that's how you'll get a residency, i am sure it has happened before.

LOL dang RJ, ouch! To agraphia, try to get some audition rotations. Even if you do great, it'll be tough to get rads. Apply widely and early, you don't lose anything but a lil $$ from applying.

    Best of luck!

Absolutely. Give it a try. Apply for Radiology & Path so if you don't get Rad you'll still have a back up.

    Thanks for the replies.

No worries RussianJoo.. I appreciate the honesty.

My father, who is a surgeon here in Texas, has a really good friend who is a radiologist. This guy tells me that he has loads on connections with the higher ups at a few programs such as U of Miami and another in St. Louis I believe. Supposedly, his father wrote one of the widely used books for radiology. Anyways, he tells me not to worry. That when Im ready, just give him a call and he'll get me into a rads residency no problem etc... he really has this no big deal sort of attitude about it... like its a for sure thing... I just find it hard to believe that someone can call up a program and say "hey I know this kid, hard worker, knew him since he was young, got a 210 on step 1 so bring him into your program and deny the other US grads with 240+ board scores. Can connection really have THAT much of an impact?
