A year is too much. 4 months at the MOST, you tend to start to lose knowledge past the 4 month mark. Best of luck!

Dude, you better have a good answer for why you took a year off. I hope it is for research or something.
There is a lot of gossip in these forums. So I like to keep it fair and balanced

    July 2009 - Intern year
    July 2010 - Radiology resident!

I have a question... say if I do get into the research... must I have publication... becuase if I go for that one year.. its very hard to get any publication as a temporary off medical student since most of the PhD graduate students at there are priority for getting a thesis and publication out... Would it look bad that I do'nt ahve any publication at all...?
if you are going to take a year off you better have something to show for it!!

tons of clinical students doing case reports, and small research projects are doing just that during their rotations....if you take a YEAR off and that is all you are doing? you should discuss this with the PI that you are planning to work with that you need publications out of the deal...preferably more than one....

if your timeline is different than the typical med schoolonem then you WILL have to explain it...period. Its not that there aren't good reasons, but you better have one....frankly taking a year off to study for a step is not that great a one...like thom said 4 months is probably max...and unless you have a particulalr interest in research or are going for a competitive specialty that emphasizies research (ie ortho), there is no reason to take a full year off after med school...many programs place a time limit (usually 5 years) of when needed to have graduated.
