Switching from a 3 year residency to a 4 year long residency.

I would really appreciate any feedback on this topic as nobody seems to know about this. If I were in a categorical IM program and did one or two years and then switched to a 4or 5 year residency program then what kind of problems would I face?

I've heard that one problem I might face in doing that is in terms of the GME funding alotted for my training. Meaning that when I enter IM (a3year program) I will be alotted a 3 year funding towards my training by the GME. And that funding becomes locked in (as far as I know). So when I switch to a 4 year or 5 year program I will only be eligible for 3 total years of funding and not for the extra years within that program. Because of that programs may not accept me as they would not receive complete funding and would have to pay out out of their pockets.

If anybody knows this to be true OR not true please let me know.

pretty much what you said...medicare funds GME(ie residencies) and when you match (or prematch) and spot, that is how many years funding you are alloted (exceptions are if you just match a prelim or transitional spot only, then you are still eligible for extra funding), so the difference would have to come from somewhere else...doesn't mean it can't be done, but can make it difficult if you are moving on to a say gen surg or rads, of something that has more than the alloted 3 yrs of IM...

it does not matter to you really....if there is a program that is wanting you to be there then they can deal with the funding......good luck
