    Bush Medicaid funding cuts.....

    Advertisements

Wonder how this is going to affect residency matching starting next year ......Anybody read this? (From the New York Post)

"May 14, 2008 -- New York City hospitals are facing the devastating loss of $1.2 billion in annual Medicaid funding under new rules ending payments to train doctors, the city's Independent Budget Office has found.

The city's hospitals - public and private - have a large share of the nation's medical residents and depend heavily on Medicaid funding for graduate medical education to subsidize their overall operations. Hospitals run by the city's Health and Hospitals Corp. would lose $390 million a year, while private voluntary hospitals would lose $790 million, the report found. ..............."

Wow I wonder how that would affect the contract that SGU has with the New York City Health and Hospitals Corp. Wow this is crazy.

    Petition

I say medical students should unite and start a petition so that this does not happen. What is the US coming too.

SXA it really is a bad time to be a med student. You can't get loans now they are cutting funding for residency spots. Unbelievable.

what I don't understand is: that I was the impression that residents were a form of cheap labour. Although there is learning and supervision involved, students at this stage have clinical responsibilities that would otherwise be done by staff physicians.

That said, reducing residency spots would increase stress on the medical system while saving a nominal amount considering the wages provided to other physician staff.

Maybe I'm missing something or not understanding this correctly?

Even the new school on St. Kitts has funding...go figure. Look it up if you are in doubt.
Do u know if the funding is u.s. type? you know, federal? That school could be another option.

Do you mean medicaid funding or student loan funding...?

With regards to state medicaid funding......the medicaid program is a state run and a state funded program. However, state medicaid programs receive a substantial subsidy from the federal government to stay fiscally afloat. State Medicaid programs as I understand are already on the fringes, despite receiving "aid" from the federal government. The impending humongous cuts would definitely impact these programs. These hospitals will be forced to "cut costs". I guess training programs are at the bottom of the list of priorities (dispensable).......just my 2 cents.....
