    step 3 for residency?

    Advertisements

HI everyone I got a quick question. Being foreign medical grad, do we need to clear all 3 steps in order to get a residency>? Cuz i only thought we needed to clear step 1 and step 2 ck cs?

No, you'll take Step 3 with all the other Residents. However, I have heard recently, on a few threads, suggestions about taking Step 3 to boost your chances of getting a residency, although I don't know how accurate that is at all.

you need only step 1 and 2 (cs and ck) to apply for residency but step 3 allows you to qualify for a H1 visa and certainly makes you more competetive than the american grads, especially if you have good scores,

I don't think it is a huge help.

you need step 3 only if you are asking the hospital for a visa. also another thing i learned during this process is about loan consolidation-in order to consolidate some of your loans you need a bachelors degree? doesn't make sense but thats what sallie mae told me yesterday, luckily i have one

another reason to wait on Step 3, besides it not being much of a help at all...some programs will reimburse you for the cost if you take it while in the program.

one real advantage of getting it done is that it is kind of a pain to find time to study for during residency....my advice, take it early.

There are many pro/cons to taking it early and later.
I took it at the very beginning of my second year and I felt having a year of medicine under my belt was very benificial. However, It certainly would have been nice to have had it over with before I started residency. Taking it during my intern year would be very difficult. However, every program is different. Its an individual decision.
