    Is US clinical experience necessary?

    Advertisements

I'm doing my medical school in the UK at the University of Southampton. In my fourth year, I must do a clinical elective. It is generally encouraged to do this somewhere other than the UK. Many previous students have gone to Africa and experienced war zone-like conditions. These students generally get amazing experiences like actually performing surgery!

My question is this, should I elect to do this rotation in the US since I'm doing my best to get there afterwards? Or should I go for the experience of Africa and helping people there. I have this premonition that I will end up standing around in the US and "observing."

Any thoughts? Will US clinical experience help my residency applications?

    Thanks in advance,

That letter of recommendation from that US clinical that you will be asking for will help.

While working in Africa would certainly be a noble and humanitarian deed, it will do virtually nothing for you, if your plans are to work in the US. For that, you will almost invariably need Letters of Recommendation from US physicians, and to get those, you'd need experience in US hospitals. Without US LoR's, you'd be finding it a true uphill battle to get a Residency spot.

Thank you for the prompt answers. J'Berg looked like so much fun to go to...

Would research experience from a US university hospital (like Johns Hopkins) also help in securing more competitive residencies too? I have to do a 6 month research project as part of my degree and I have a few contacts at Johns Hopkins...

Johns Hopkins will help you, whatever happens in the rest of your career. It's a truly great hospital (unfortunately situated in a truly unplesant place). However, do try to find out what your duties would be. You could be wasting your time, or work with truly unpleasant PI's, which JHU also has its share of...
