    Internship - necessary ??

    Advertisements

Hi, I have a stupid question.
I'm applying for EM and surgery residencies...
I finished 2 years of surgical residency in my home country.
I'm ECFMG-certified and like I said, I'm applying to residencies.

    So here is my question:

Do I have to do an internship ?
Where comes the internship in ?
Can anyone clear out that internship situation for me ?

Most states require 2 to 3 years of ACGME accredited residency to apply for licensure - foreign medical graduates.

I'm not sure on the exact requirements but New York and Florida appear to have the ability for FMG's to receive a limited license if they work as a house physician or in an underserved area. They of course have to be under the direct supervision of a state licensed physician who offers the employment.

Checkout these links for exact requirements:

Are you asking if you can get into a PGY-2 position based on your internship year in a foreign country. My guess is no unless it was ACGME accredited, ie: Canada, Puerto Rico, USA.

internship is the first year of any residency, nothing you did outside the US counts so you start as a new intern. surgery is straight forward a 5 year catagorical residency but they also offer preliminary spots which are basically free slave labor since the vast majority don't take you into catagorical and if you do get a catagorical after being a surgery prelim most places have you start as an intern again.

EM i beleive needs an internal medicine either pre-lim or transitional year before actually starting the em residency, some programs include it as part of your match, others require you to find it on your own.
