    EM and SURGERY residency

    Advertisements

    Hi, I'm getting nervous...
I'm ECFMG-certified, unfortunatly only passing scores, 2 great US LORs and 2 great LOR from my home country. I did real great research and 2 years of residency in surgery.
I applied for EM and surgery - together 120 applications.
So far - NOTHING! ONLY rejections.
and it's getting end of November!!

Is there still some hope out there or should I get ready for scramble
and in the meantime study for Step3 ?

Thanks for you replies and happy holidays.

I would encourage you to study for step 3 and prepare for the scramble, that is what i am doing too. I passed step 1 with a 78 and aced step 2 with a 99, passed CS and ecfmg certified, applied to 42 EM programs and 35 Pathology programs, all i have gotten is rejections, not one interview so prepare for step 3 and make sure you ace it..

For em you might want to get an EM SLOR and do at least 1 (2 is better) EM rotation.

    Surgery is tough as well...

    EM and Surgery residencies

Hi Vadimk, thanks for your response.
I have 1 strong US LOR from emergency physician, also 1 strong US LOR from a well-known surgeon.
I worked at a top german university clinic, work experience in anesthesiology plus surgery, transplant, ER and intensive care experience, experimental research work but nothing.

About 40 rejections so far. It's sad and I'm quite discouraged like many others. Spent thousands of bucks for ? The scramble ?

    Man, that's frustrating...

well i'm sorry to tell you that the usmle scores are the main point in reviewing applicants.
Let's be honest here, PDs look mainly on your step 1 & 2 CK, then decide to go further or stop there.

    Try this place

Try a place called Baystate Medical Center in Springfield Mass for both EM and Surgery. The programs there have competely fallen apart and most American medical students are avoiding that place like the plague (especially EM).

But it is part of Tufts (somehow) and you probably stand a chance getting in if you act fast.

No offense but if its that bad maybe its better not to match there, god forbid they close then he'll be out of a job and out of a visa.

they have this thing in US for EM called a "SLOR" is a standardized LOR from cordem.org website - for some reason most PD's thinks its much better. EM is very competetive this year (as is surgery), many US grads are getting few interviews.

I just talked to a surgery PD by the way at a crappy community program (but to their benefit its a great location) and they got 800 applications and will interview 100 canididates for 2 categorical and 2 prelim spots. He said IMGs automatically go to bottom of list and are ranked low even if they get an interview. He said the only IMG he's going to take is someone who did a very long rotation there and showed a lot of interest.
