Earnings or potential compensation is NOT dependent on where the person did their residency. It is based on where the job is located and the amount of work the group does within the year per person as well as private imaging centers owned by the group. Most people completing residency at an Ivy league do not want to live in an undesirable locale where the highest paying jobs are generally found.

Is it possible to find a close to 7 figure radiology job? Absolutely but not at all common! These jobs are not easy. Generally, you are reading almost twice as many studies per year than the average. Only the fastest and most experienced radiologists are capable of these numbers! The latest MGMA figures show the average Radiology partner earns in the 500,000+ ballpark which is the highest along with Orthopedic Surgeons. The 3 highest compensated fields to start are Ortho, Rads, and Cardiology at roughly 360k, 355k, and 342k per year. This is not 900k or even 700k

If you want to get a sense of the jobs available, look at Radiology Jobs | Rad Tech Jobs. One caveat, the best jobs, usually, do not need to advertise.

On another note, the Deficit Reduction Act (DRA) will slash most docs over 4% in income next year and the technical fee that is collected from doing an imaging study by any physician is set to be reduced by 15% to 20%. These will bring done earnings appreciably. I don't know the full details but it is set to be implemented in 2007. I have heard that primary care will be the least affected if that is any consolation.

Medicine is getting hit from everywhere! You will make less than the docs do now without inflation being accounted for.

zon, while congrats to your friend, i think you need to qualify things here first.
To begin with, he's hardly the first IMG to get radiology in recent years, an sgu grad is at harvard; a saba grad at yale etc.

However you are NOT correct. To suggest that school doesnt matter and only the usmle does is simply not right. It does matter. And mroe than the usmle score counts, however yes it is very important.

Also, you really need to do a little more leg work with regard to understanding median income in medicine.

Im pleased for your friend and such success is important here, but without context and understanding its as useless as people who make sweeping comments that imgs are not likely to get radiology.

I wont even begin to address your comments on his wife.

youre incorrect about htis. income has nothing to do with where you trained. locale matters, private versus academic, and specilzation.

    zon..

this 'zon' character appears to be a mentally challenged child of some sort, he's looking to apply to st. james in one forum, talking about a friend in radiology in another forum, and saying that he's about to apply to residency in another forum.........hmmmmmmmm

Not sure which Student doc data he/she was looking at!

Just FYI... That is 1998 data which is not the same as what has been offerered in the last 3 to 4 years. Just look at the link I provided above and that will give the best idea of what actually is available. Remember that those positions are the difficult one's to fill so the great jobs are usually snapped up before reaching the need for recruitment.

Still, vastly less than 700k to 900k average.

Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) is the most reliable source of income but to get the data costs big money. They only give their info to members and I had a peak at it when I was in my Surgery rotation 2005. The Laproscopic surgeon I rotated with was a member and showed me the figures I quoted above.

I hope people don't choose a medical career for that kind of stupid considerations.

I understand now how the interviews can be relevants.
