URGENT, ABOUT PGY2 POSITION, anybody tried for transfer?PLEASE HELP

    Advertisements

I Want to try for pgy2 position. please can somebody help me when to reveal to PD about my trial for pgy2.
If we reveal to PD about transfer and we don't get the position outside, what happens to position at the current program?? My question is do our position at current program becomes insecured?

somebody who has gone through same situation, please let me know about dealing with current program.
    I greatly appreciate your help.
I am trying for transfer because I have little kid.

I am looking for pgy1 to pgy2 transfer in Internal medicine. when i called couple of programs, the programs are asking me to send the documents which should include letter from PD of current program and also an UPDATED CV.

Some people advised me not to reveal the current program, that you are trying for transfer, until I secure a position or getting positive respnse from other programs. Even for the application they are asking for PD letter. How can I secure position first, before revealing to PD?

Thanks a lot for all your help.

It's very difficult to transfer programs without the blessing of your original program. Put yourself in the new PD's shoes -- of course you want to talk to the applicants old PD before seriously considering the transfer applicant. So, it's virtually impossible to hide your intentions from your current PD if you are thinking about transfer. Most programs I am aware of, the first step of considering a transfer applicant is to talk to the old program director. This is what we do in our program now.

    Thanks PICARD

one more question. After you let your PD know about your transfer, and you don't get any position where you want to go, what happens to your position in current program? will it remain secured for the next 2 years???

    thanks a lot

    Reasons for tranferring

I think a lot depends on the reasons you are trying to transfer.

Is the program on probation? Are you trying to move because of family problems?

If you are just tired of the program and want something else, then that might be a problem.

However, there are tons of PGY2 positions after the match. If you just want to GET OUT, you can wait and try after the match. Many will be willing to take you provided you don't have any infractions at your current program.....like reprimands etc.....

If your reasons for tranferring are sound and not just "don't want to work with you bozo's anymore" then your position should be sound and you can complete the rest of the two years without a problem. You are not the first to transfer and won't be the last.

You mentioned a little kid..........are you a single parent? Even if not, your spouse may need some help with the child while he or she works as well. I think being honest here with your situation would be in your favor. You have a sound reason. If they don't understand at your program, then the program you are applying to should certainly understand. Trying to juggle that daycare when you are stuck at the hospital is a nighmare....not to mention when the child gets sick. Having family support in the area is almost a must.

As for your current position, it depends entirely on your program.
Contracts for the following academic year are typically signed in december.
If your reason for transfer is not because you are doing poorly in your current program and you are about to fail, then sit down with your program director and discuss the issues. You are probably not the first resident asking to transfer in or out. You won't be the last either. So talk it over with your program director. You can't do much without the PD.
