    50%?...

    Advertisements

When you guys say that only 50% of FMGS get a residency match what does that mean exactly? What happens to them? Do they try again the next year? Or do they just give up on applying? Is it 50% becuz they don't score high enough or because a bias against fmgs? Scary Stat!

    Hi

Not all FMGs participate in the Match. Some are offered spots outside of the Match. The numbers get dicey when you consider FMGs that signed up for the Match, got a pre-Match offer then subsequently withdrew from the Match.

To make it even more confusing, a good number of FMGs that don't make the match, but do get a spot in the post-Match, or scramble.

Now, what you have left are the FMGs that signed up for Match, did not get a spot, tried to scramble, and still no spot, and no offers outside of the Match. Could this be your 50%? I don't have figures, but just keep these things in mind next time you see some numbers.
I used to pray and pray for a bike and never got one. Later I learned that God doesn't work that way... so I went out and stole a bike and asked God for forgiveness.

It's easy, just a simple mathmetical equation can solve it:
IMG's apply through ERAS and register with NRMP = 100%

    IMG's who get pre-match offers = lets say 10%

IMG's who get matched = 49.5% (a constant number each year)

IMG's who get scramble = lets say 15%

the Total number will be about 75%

What I want to say here, the 49.5% refers to the IMG's who get matched,

the remaining 50% = Pre-match + Scramble + the one's who will try next year.

P.S. the numbers here are only for explanation purpose (except for the match one)...

I have posted the actual numbers elsewhere, but am too busy to look them up now. Click on the link on competitiveness below in my signature which I have posted on my blog for part of the numerical story.

About 6,500 IMGs (US citizens, greencards, visa's, whatever) without prior US GME gain a PGY1 position each year. Of these, about 2/3 get it through the NRMP match. That is the 50% of active applicants in the match (meaning passed Step 1, Step 2 CS and CK before ROL deadline and have at least one program on their rank order list) we talk about each year.

However, almost 2,000 get a position outside the match. As to how many of them get this pre/post match, we simply don't know.
