    Pathology or EM possible

    Advertisements

    I am an IMG with Step 1 - 78
    Step 2CK - 99
    Step CK- Pass
    ECFMG - Certified

What are my chances of either EM or pathology? I did EM as my elective and currently employed in an Urgent care center in a private hospital, no US experience and no research experience.

None of us can tell you for sure...you'd be better off researching programs you're interested in online. Some will give cut offs for scores, U.S. clinical experience required, etc. to give you a better idea. You can always apply to both specialties and see what interview offers you get.

that was an incredible comeback on step 2, so i think programs will really look at that.

going on intuition here, i think you would definately match in pathology, and a ok shot at EM. it depends on a lot of other factors though (previous ER experience, which you have, connections, etc.)

but you proved your metal with that step 2, and PD's will see it.

It will be interesting to see what he/she matches in...

Yes, EM is traditionally more difficult to get into, but won't a lot of Path programs put more weight on Step 1? Who knows...

I think your stellar step 2 score is going to go a long long way. Good luck in your interviews. G

For current students what did you do differently in studying for step 2ck to do so well?
When you become my age you will realize all of the hard work and studying was worth the effort.
"60 years young" another 60 to go if my doctor sons keep me alive with free prescriptions!!

Actually i am still working 2 jobs like i did when studying for step 1, 12 hours per day. Being a practising physician sure makes studying for step 2 more interesting. I was much more motivated as what i was studying I was actually practising and it helped me put things into perspective. I had the kaplan books this time around as well and signed up with USMLE world 2 months before the exam. I read off secrets and first aid twice too. Hope this helps.
