Passed ECFMG in 1983 and now looking for residency

    Advertisements

hey iam a Podiatry student. My mom passed her ECFMG exam in 1983. At that there was no USMLE. She now has a valid ECFMG certificate. She immigrated to USA 3 yrs back and is currently managing our MRI center. Now she plans to join residency.

She doesnt have any USMLE scores. All she has a valid ECFMG Certifcate. Will that affect her chances of getting a residency. I know some states have graduation cutoff. But are there any programs that are easy and IMG friendly. Do any of you know any states that are having more residency chances than others. i mean she was a Genral practioner in India from last 20yrs. she has some good LORs from US Physcians.

Any advice or any direction will be really appreciated. Please guys guide us.

She may need to retake those exams. I am not sure if the certificate is still valid. Once that is cleared up (call the ECFMG to verify her status), then it's a different story. I have seen people get in but must show recent clinical experience especially in the USA. Good luck.

Hi, I got certified with the old ECFMG exams in 1994. I applied for residency programs last season but did not get any interviews. I was advised to redo the USMLE 1 and 2 which is needed to be able to sit for USMLE 3. I have done the USMLE steps 1 and 2 and passed them. I am now in the process of reapplying to residency programs. I will advise her to redo the exams since she has to pass them prior to completing residency. However, if she has a program that is willing to take her with the old exams she can commence residency. The more time she has to concentrate and study for the exams will be to her overall advantage because she has to pass them so as to do Step 3 before becoming board certified at the end of her residency program. Good luck to her.
