applying transitional year without applying for advanced programs

    Advertisements

    Hi
I wanted to gain one year clinical experience in USA before going in for categorical Internal Medicine position next year as it would increase my attractiveness to programs esp the bigger ones(I am not talking harvard hopkins emory kinds ...just the university programs with good fellowship options and chances)

with this intention I was wondering if I should apply for transitional year programs without really telling them if i was going in for anesthesia or any such advanced program match simultaneously. Would I have fair chance esp if I am keen only on an H1B visa .

And how competetive are these positions for me to match (IMG , fresh grad, no significant research achievement and scores of 92 and 89 on the steps with CS passed)

Also would a preliminary position in IM be easier to obtain than transitional year?? Will I have to specify a PGY2 speciality interest in this case to be even considered?

Transitional Year- This is good if you're still unsure of what you want to do for Residency as you will spend your first year rotating through several fields of medicine, kind of like clinicals (OBGYN, IM, etc...)

Preliminary Year- This is also another option for the intern (or first year of Residency) as it's a year of a particular specialty (i.e.- IM or Surg)

Say you want to go into something like Radiology, which most programs you start as a PGY-2 (second year), you would need to do a Prelim/Transitional year first. I've heard from several people that these programs prefer a Prelim year over a Transitional year.
