    January Residency???

    Advertisements

Hi, I'm a Ross student and will be done with all my rotations by Dec 2006. I have no idea what to do until residency starts in June. I heard somewhere you can start residency in January? Can anyone tell me which programs allow that? Btw, I plan on doing Family Practice.
    Thanks!

the only time i have ever heard of people being allowed to start in january, it is because something has held them up. in other words, they matched for a July start, but couldnt start, and waited until january. for you, that would require a year wait, self defeating in the least. i would try to space out your rortations so that they finish later, and take alot of tiem off. you will cherish that time off later!

i think he is asking if he can get into a program early, as he will be finished 6 months prior to starting residency. my point was that i have heard of programs allowing you to start in january..but as a late start. never heard of anyone allowing you to get in early. i guess a pre-match may allow you to pull this off. but I have had numerous friends pre-match, and from their experience, i would avoid any pre-match offers. every single one of my friends left their programs(some at considerable expense in time and money) after doing just 1 year.

Just wait for July. Meanwhile, apply as an extern or observer. Or, find programs with off-cycle schedules.

In NY, look for non-designated, non-credit programs until July. This may serve as a good interview alternative.

a teacher at our school started residency in january 2006 at kingsbrook hospital, NY, in internal medicine. i think there was an open slot b/c someone either dropped out of residency, or there was an unfilled spot. she was already ECFMG certified way before starting.

I heard of Peninsula Hospital in Far Rockaway NY. Try St. John's Episcopal for IM. There are programs out there where people can start in mid cycle. Openings vary from year to year. There was a FP spot in Nebraska I believe (found it on a google search) that would take mid cycle students.
