    hi
during residency, how is the yrly vacation given to us?

i mean do they ask us for ur preferred month at the beginning of residency when we have to tell them when we want our vacation during the next one yr?

do we usually get it when we want it?

I am in a program where I get 3 weeks off. My program is very nice that I can practically have any time I want ( unless I am on call, where I can switch with others ). I can take it all at once or, more preferably for me & them, I can spread it throughout the year, which I do. I had Christmas, New years, Thanksgiving and Easter off ( those are bonus holidays, plus all the other holidays like July 4th ) plus my 3 weeks off. I also get educational & admisitrative leave for conferences/meetings/boards. It all depends on the program. A friend of mine gets 4 weeks off but must request the time at the beginning of July/August & must be taken all at once. Have fun on your days off, it's a nice way to recharge your battery.

in my program, we all get 2 weeks off in first year and each subsequent year we get 3 weeks. we are not advised to take it all at once and to take a max of 1 week at a time (there have been exceptions)....

it's helpful to make all the long weekends into 4-5 days off...i.e taking a day before and after a long weekend...

we have to ask for holidays 3 months in advance, but if something came up and needed it right away, it is allowed.

we get 4 weeks. one of those weeks is either christmas or new years(not both!!). you can take no more then 1 week at a time. they can only be done during non-call months. you need to get the dates in by early fall, more so because you risk losing out on a date due to too many people being gone at once.
