Food poison- lotus-leaves look like vegetable?

    Advertisements

I bought some lotus-leaves look like vegetable, and the locals told me that they use it for soup.

So I put some in my chicken soup, I thought that it might be good for my soul. hahaha.

Little did I know, I got some serious food poison. It feels as if my entire mouth was cut by tiny tiny knives. And that sensation can be extended all the way to my stomach. And I almost vomited afterwards.

So has anyone had any similar experience after eating this thing?

    hmm....

sounds like you could use a plant encyclpedia or something....

    http://www.plants.usda.gov/
    http://www.vth.colostate.edu/poisonous_plants/

    ....and maybe some pepto:

It would also be good to find out exactly what it is you're about to consume before actually eating it next time...

    Chinese proverb

It must have something to do with that old Chinese proverb about not eating your Lotus notes, or you get paper cuts in your mouth...or something

    calalloo

Green leafy thing like spinach? It is called calaloo in Grenada...it must be boiled until soft before it is eaten, or the fibers will cut you. This is a common mistake, and they should have warned you. But it is very nutritious stuff.
