Another reason why I hate dealing with the STealships.

I prefer buying used and dealing with my family mechanic or well-repped performance shop. Sadly, it's hard to find a good, reliable mechanic. You'd figure that building a relationship with a customer is better in the long-run, but I guess there are a lot of gullible people and questionable mechanics out there.

A good way of finding relatively good honest mechanics is your local school shop, while in training these kids are very eager to earn the trust of a few clients, word of mouth is very important for them. At least that is what has worked for me in the past.

    Now...to my 5 mile run!!!

carmax is awesome. great prices, and great warranty deals. and also the warranty you purchase is serviced by the DEALER, not carmax. i highly recommend.

best way to get a good car for a good price: deal w/ the fleet manager. he only cares about moving the cars, not the profit lines, and he's not paid on commission in most cases.

another great option that is rarely spoken of is purchasing from a car rental agency. most will dump cars after 20-30k miles, and due to the business they keep them in tip top shape. carmax in fact purchases these in bulk
but remember that, even when those who move you be kings or men of power, your soul is in your keeping alone. When you stand before God you cannot say "but I was told by others to do thus" or that "virtue was not convenient at the time." This will not suffice. Remember that.

best deal around is the Ford A-plan and then going to a credit union for the loan.

First off, I would NEVER ever ever ever buy an ex-rental car. They are notoriously badly driven and abused.
I would also just plain and simple never buy a new car. It is without doubt one of the worst investments one can ever make. Depreciation begins the second you sign the contract.
Just buy a second hand car, there are TONS out there selling for a steal, and most modern vehicles are good for 200k anyway. Just check it out very well, make sure there is no collision history and a good service history. The status symbol of having a new car is ridiculously overrated.

    Great article by the way.

Agreed 100%. Ex-rentals can be pandora's boxes, especially suspension issues...not all of them though.

This is true, not to mention bent chassis, abused transmissions, all problems you won't notice for a while, but will eventually become very serious.

The problem is working out which ones haven't been abused, and that is impossible. Rather buy from the rich housewife who is upgrading because her husband got a raise.

i've had multiple friends who purchase from fleet/rentals and have never had an issue, and multiples who have purchased used from consumers who had tons of problems.

the best way to go about it probably is getting a certified preowned with a warranty.
