New amendment in health reform seeking to expand 15000 residency slots

    Advertisements

Action Alert: Contact Your Senators to Support Increasing Residency Training Slots

'In response to strong grassroots efforts, several key Democratic senators are stepping up to address the physician workforce crisis with an amendment (SA 2909) to the Senate health care reform bill that would increase by 15,000 the number of Medicare-funded residency training positions. It will take more action by people like you to ensure this amendment passes in conjunction with health care reform legislation. Therefore, the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine (AAIM) encourages you to contact your senators and urge them to support this important amendment.

Introduced by Senator Nelson (D-FL), Senator Reid (D-NV), Senator Kerry (D-MA), Senator Stabenow (D-MI), and Senator Leahy (D-VT), the amendment contains provisions similar to those in the “Resident Physician Shortage Reduction Act.” Namely, the amendment, if passed, would increase graduate medical education (GME) positions by 15,000 with preference given to primary care specialties and allow unused positions to be redirected to other teaching hospitals. GREAT news!
but remember that, even when those who move you be kings or men of power, your soul is in your keeping alone. When you stand before God you cannot say "but I was told by others to do thus" or that "virtue was not convenient at the time." This will not suffice. Remember that.

If it's coming this late in the game and the public option is pretty much dead, then yea i think it will.

That will be good. More Doctors= better care for patients and more opportunities for IMG's.
The increase in US MedSchool and seats have increase, I think. Also there is an increase in STEP1 Score lowering the IMG's passing the exam.

I would love to know how many IMG's are in the US with ECFMG certification and from those how many are US citizens and how many are nonresidents.
So an increase in those seats would give the green light to more IMG's. HURAAAAAAAAYYYYYY

Also I heard that they will there is a plan of making IMG's do an extra year. I do not know how, if is residency or do some type of community work, etc.

they will never give an extra year to IMGs. the current laws actually state that you can't discriminate based on where a student goes to school
