but remember that, even when those who move you be kings or men of power, your soul is in your keeping alone. When you stand before God you cannot say "but I was told by others to do thus" or that "virtue was not convenient at the time." This will not suffice. Remember that.

Heart disease compared to Cancer is far more preventable. I have met Ironman type individuals who were floored by cancer but heart disease is very preventable through lifestyle and diet changes. I knew a lot of people who do not smoke and wound up with cancer.

Of course many people who smoke don't get cancer. A causal relationship has been established though.

If you live long enough, cancer will come. If you live long enough, you will get heart disease. Prevention of those two pathologies at this point is a fallacy, what we do is mitigate risks and delay onset and progression.

As for the smoking and cancer thing....most people realize that they actually don't know many smokers who got cancer. So what we need to also point out as doctors is the effects of chronic inflamation in the airways: chronic bronchitis+reactive airway disease+emphysema=COPD=pulmonary cripple and a slow suffocating death over the course of years as you miserably drag an oxygen bottle around with you until you are bed ridden.

as i can attest to my last clerkship (pulmonlogy) smoking is a terrible, terrible thing to do to yourself.
