I adopted it last year. Up until then I didn't have any sig. and was beginning to feel a bit left out.
It's from one of my favourite writers - Samuel Beckett.
I recently saw a relatively new member, can't remember who, had also tagged the altered form you quote (problem for matter)
I think part of the reason for that particular quote was as an antidote to a certain kind of sentiment I saw in quite a few vmd sigs. I haven't got any examples at my fingertips - and don't want to cause offence. The sort of thing I'm talking about was to my mind polyannaish, or else a kind of med. student machismo which refuses to entertain any doubts; overuses the word 'loser'; never admits any weaknesses - especially failure.
It doesn't reflect my general success in life - at least I hope not

wow the guy from quantum leap was smart.
but remember that, even when those who move you be kings or men of power, your soul is in your keeping alone. When you stand before God you cannot say "but I was told by others to do thus" or that "virtue was not convenient at the time." This will not suffice. Remember that.

Somehow I totally missed out on Quantum Leap. The description in Wikipedia looked good. I think I'll give it a try.
