    Would you go anywhere?

Just curious how important location is to all of you for residency and why? If you're looking to do something very competitive, perhaps you'd go anywhere you had a shot at it? I'm not talking about your dream position at MGH, I'm saying if you wanted, say.... Dermatology and got offered a position in Anchorage, Alaska, would you go?

Obviously, my first choice is my home state of Maryland. But if I can't get there and have to go out of state, I want to go somewhere that's warm all year long. Florida, S. Carolina, Georgia. Maybe Texas, LA, Alabama, Mississippi. OH yeah, I want to be near the ocean too. ANd, I think folks are a lot nicer in the south.

the car's on fire and there's no driver at the wheel and the sewers are all muddied with a thousand lonely suicides and a dark wind blows. the government is corrupt and we're on so many drugs with the radio on and the curtains drawn. we're trapped in the belly of this horrible machine and the machine is bleeding to death.

when i started, i wanted illinois only. when i interviewed, i applied all over ( more out of the unfounded fear of not matching). i ended up ranking number 1 aprogram that was awesome, but in apart of the country that i would never have imagined going to prior to med school. I dont regret it at all, and actually start my first attending job post residency in july, in the same area that i went to for residency! Dont be too narrow minded. even if you only want FP, interview all over at the best programs, and dont consider location as being very important. you will spend most of your time in the hospital anyways! I am always amazed though by the people willing to go to a third world country for med school, but they wont even consider doing residency in someplace "off the beaten path" in the states.

I'll go to Alaska all I care, as long as I am placed in a residency that I am looking for!

I wound up interviewing at a few places that I didn't imagine I would like. Turned out I loved them, even though they were initially geographically undesireable. I highly recommend that you give programs a look based on what the program offers, more than where you want to live. Don't get me wrong, geography is great. But, I thought I wanted to be in my home state more than anything. Turns out that the highest of my home state programs was 2, but the rest were way down the list. I got number one, in a state that I had never even set foot in before my interviews there.

So, I say it is a great idea to keep your options open, and you may be very pleasantly surprised.

I would go anywhere for residency as long as it helped achieve my goals. Residency is only a few years and since I haven't lived in one place more than a few years my whole life, it would not be a big deal.
