    Need advice for MCAT's

    Advertisements

    Hello All,

I am currently taking my basic science classes as I already have a bachelor of science degree. I am taking Bio 1&2 this semester. I plan to complete my science classes (Bio 1&2, Chem 1&2, Orgo 1&2 and Physics 1&2) by the fall of 2010.
While completing these courses I plan to study for the MCAT's as well as study for them after I complete the courses for 2-4 months, which pushes the timeline to take the MCAT's to Feb-April . However, my goal is to somehow apply U.S. American schools for Fall 2011, considering my age which is 27. I wanted to know in order for me to do that when will I have to take my MCAT's by and if there any possible ways I can apply for fall 2011 as I would not like to delay it any further.

I appreciate all the help. Thank you.

I don't think this is feasible at all: US Med Schools will want to start interviewing applicants in Winter 2011 for the Fall 2011 intake. Sending out decisions in the timeframe you are planning to take the MCAT. BY the time your MCAT results come out in 2011 you will want to start to complete AMCAS applying for the Fall 2012 class.

Your plan for studying for the MCAT sounds pretty good though. Some people I have spoken to found that MCAT prep books were also a good way to learn the individual subjects as well. So you might be killing two birds with one stone that way.

    need advice for MCAT's

You mean winter 2010 for fall 2011 admissions?

What would I have to do in order for me to take the MCAT's and apply for fall 2011. Given my age I would not like to get into Med school by 29, which will be fall 2011. When should I take the MCAT's and complete my basic science classes by so that I can quciky apply to U.S. Med schools by fall 2011.

    Thanks.

In order to be in med school for Fall 2011, you will need to submit your apps starting June 2010. Ther earlier you submit your apps the better the chance you have of getting in. AMCAS will probably accept conditional pre-req completion (meaning you can apply to the schools telling them that you will have finished basic sciences by the time you enter med school. Most US seniors do this, so I dont think its a problem.) But there is no way you can apply with conditional MCAT, that needs to have been written, and scores must have been reported in order for you to submit your AMCAS app.

The AMCAS app closes in Nov I think, so there is possible way for you to take the MCAT in Feb-Apr and be accepted for fall 2011.

I understand your anxiousness in getting into med school bc of your age, but it is likely that there will be ppl in your class that are much older than you. Your other option is to try a carib school where there are at least 2 classes accepted every year. One in Aug, and one in Jan. Some schools even have May acceptance.

If you have any other questions feel free to PM me.

    Ne

So if I submit my apps by this Sept-Oct, they can wait for me to complete my basic science courses by Spring 2011 However, can they wait for me to take my MCAT's and submit the scores in Feb-April 2011. This way I can get admitted for fall 2011.

    Thanks.

They will not wait for your MCAT scores. You can't electronically submit the app without a score entered. I want to reiterate that your best chance for admission is to submit your app when the process opens int he beginning of June. By waiting until Sept/Oct, you are really minimizing your chances for acceptance.

Absolutely not. If you are applying for Fall 2011 admission, the latest MCAT most schools will accept is the August/September 2010 exam administration.
