Foreign Medical Schools for older applicants

    Advertisements

I am in my forties. I always wanted to go to medical school, but I married early & had kids to support so I went to work instead of school. I've had a very successful career in finance, but my work has never really been satisfying. Now that my kids are in college & I am single again, I would like to return to school. I have a ** in experimental psychology with good science grades & several years experience as an EMT. Would anyone have any suggestions for schools that might be willing to accept an applicant like me?

most likely i think you wont get accepted straight into MD bc you have been out of the whole studying and classroom setting for awhile now.

but i have seen a few older students at sgu, so yes its very doable if you really want it

    Here are the do steps:
    1. Do you have the pre-req courses in Biology, chemistry and physics? If not get them. A good US school post bac program is best if you want to get into a good US school. Science needs to be a good solid 3.5 or better
    2. Take the MCAT after prep, practice and studying. need a 32 or better.
    3. There are US schools that take older students, Tulane in N.O. is one so is UVa. This is doable.

    Don'ts:
    1. Don't do an island school which has a pre-med program that does not have New York approval as that the credits may not count and the expense will be so high! Do your research!

I call it like I see it. I am not paid by ValueMD or any school. Nor do I recruit for any school.

Good luck - by doing the pre-reqs within a year - that will answer many questions by the admissions board. A very good MCAT trumps a lot stuff. So I would start doing MCAT type questions NOW to prep for it.
