    Prospective Foreign Med Schools

    Advertisements

I'm a sophomore at Rutgers and I was wondering if my GPA/MCAT aren't enough to get into a good school in the US, should I look internationally for schools that would take me? And which countries offer good programs in English? (I hear a lot about Europe and the Caribbean) Is it generally easier to get into schools(with the exception of like Oxford and the ilk) outside the US? And is it generally cheaper? (I've heard that schools in England are actually more expensive?)

That's a broad question. First of all, you're still a sophomore. Work hard to get a good GPA and MCAT, you still have time. Second of all, foregin medical schools should be looked at as last resort. Spend an extra year in school or what have you, but always look at US first and foremost.

Secondly, look around at the subforums. Be careful about selecting foregin schools, ESPECIALLY caribbean schools. Not all schools are made, or viewed the same by Licensure boards.

Well sometimes I wonder if I haven't already shot myself in the foot because of my not so stellar freshman year.(D in Bio 1, Ds in Calc 1--took it twice at Rutgers and then got an A in community college, an F, D, and C+ in Chem 1) I am trying hard to bring it up although I'm still not the best. It's always on my mind.

I don't wish to put you off, however getting into a UK medical school is hard ... if you are an A student. Lots of people applying for few places = fierce competition. As a general rule of thumb, UK medical schools require Chemistry to be an applicants strongest subject.

With rgds. The UK med schools, you will need A's, Oxbridge or not. Infact most respectable UK universities will need A's and B's to study science.

Obviously the grades I speak of will need translating to GPA, but they are just a guide.

Short of it is that if you don't have the grades to get in a US med school, its probably better not to look at the UK as an alternative. The carrib is probably your best bet.

    Good luck!
