University of Medical Sciences in Poznań (a.k.a. Karol Marcinkowski University of Medical Sciences)

Karol Marcinkowski University of Medical Sciences in Poznań officially changed its English name to the University of Medical Sciences in Poznań, in the spring of 2003. In order to reflect this change, I'm starting this new thread for all past, present, or future students of UMS in Poznań (or KMU as it was formerly called). I hope this will be a place to ask questions, share experiences, advice, or whatever one feels like talking about.

With that said, let the posting begin....

I know it is how you do. I know that I will do great. I was just curious, because of what I read about Charles U. and how many, up to 50%, drop out.

The class sizes are not nearly as big as the rumor of 80-100. I'm in the same class as Gerry, and we now have 52 students. The freshman class has 65 or 67 (cannot remember exactly).

We won't know how many students make it to the clinical phase until next year when we start; however, the 3rd year class started with 43 students and this year (their 3rd year), they have 37 students.

And on a side note, krakows has awesome bars for those nights after studying.
My class had only 2 cadavers (class size of 52), so during lab two groups would actually get to dissect while the other groups would look at body sections from previously dissected cadavers (for example, lower limbs, upper limbs, head and neck, etc.). That was a bit of a dissappointment in that each group didn't get their own cadaver from start to finish.

Hi, I have Canadian Citizenship, but I was born in Taiwan. Recently, I heard about this opportunity to study the 4 year program at PUMS thru an eduction agency in Taiwan.

How strong is the presence of Taiwanese population there? Will there be a difference if I applied as a Canadian citizen, instead going thru the agency? I want to know more information beside the agency because I do not trust them will put my best interest into perpective.

For current students, how did you apply in the first place? Did you go thru an agency or just contact the school directly? Will there be any advantage going the agency way? Also, there is an upcoming interview process at Taiwan in March I believe. Anyone know how it will affect the dead line for application if I do not want to go that route?

My questions might not make much sense, thanks for your time in advance when you try to crack it.

Hi All, Well its only a matter of 6 months before I go to Poznan and just wanted to ask you some things to ease my mind (that is if you have time).
I have been thinking about the US rotations, and have been looking for a list of hospitals that PUMS is associated with (specially here in Texas)but have been unable to find one. Do you have any idea what choices PUMS Students have. Also is it really for a full year in the US, I would love to have the choice of being back in the states in a couple of years, just to keep some sanity, however all the PUMS literature says 16 weeks, so I am a little confused.
I know I should start looking for a student visa, but some students say its not needed as long as you leave the country every 2 months. What do you think on this issue, do you still get visas.
OK all thanks alot and best wishes

    Hi,
I have an interview with KMU in two weeks and I was just wondering if anyone could tell me about their experience at the interview. What sort of questions do they ask you? How should you dress and present yourself? Are you allowed to ask questions yourself? How long is the interview? Is there any way I can prepare myself for the interview ie. read bioethics books? current medical journals etc? Also,do they inform you about their decision right after the interview or do you have to wait a few weeks?

Any tips and advice would be really helpful, I have no idea how to approach this or what to expect from it.

    Thanks a lot
    ss

supersonikk, the interview is very laid back. It will be with 4-6 people and they mostly want to get to know you as a person. They will ask you about your future plans, your interests, and maybe what you know about Poland. The interview takes about 20 minutes and you will be given time to ask questions. Don't stress, wear a suit/tie, and read a short history of Poland so you know a little bit about the country. After the interview they will ask you to wait outside and then they talk among themselves. They will call you in and let you know of their decision. Biggest thing is don't stress! Everyone is very nice and laidback.

    Good Luck!!

...and if your not from the area, like I wasn't, don't make the mistake of staying at the cheap motel they have listed on the paper of places to stay. Believe me it stinks, figuratively and literally!!!

    Hi all,
Just thought it would be nice to make a list serv of all the people that are going to KMU this next year. I have made the decision to go into the 4 year program and will start in september. If there are any more people going over to Poznan in 6 months drop me a line, it would be great to meet some of my future classmates and get organized, specially when dealing with the school, that way we can share information and make sure that we are all up to par when it comes to leaving the states (or canada).
