how are You doing med1 ??

    Advertisements

Hello first year students. Unfortunately, I was not able to start this year despite being accepted. I was wandering how You are doing - first year of 4 year program. How is it ?
Let us know if tests are harder ( due to low USMLE step 1 passing rate this year). I hope next year loan from FAFSA will be available again.

Hello!Too bad to hear you couldn't come. I was in the same boat with the loss of the loans, and was quite upset about it. I think we lost a good many people as our class size is about 50, and the years above us have almost 70 (I think). So far it's been great. We started off with Polish for a week and then the last three weeks have been just Polish and Histology (Histology sometimes lasts from 8am to 6 or 7pm!). The class itself isn't bad, its the pace which is difficult because we cover so much in so little time and then are tested on it way after we covered the material. The proffs are good for the most part. Some are hard to understand but for the most part going to class for histo is useless anyway because it's easier to understand if you just read the book. Hope to see you here next year!

    FAFSA Loans for PUMS

    Hey guys!
I am applying to PUMS for next year, however, I can't find them on the FAFSA international school section! I found every other Polish school on there. Are they no longer offering financial aid for this Poznan? That's kind of a deal breaker for me...

    Pums 4md 2015

Hey kwoliczka: It's a pity you couldn't come! Yes I just wanted to add some stuff to gernald's post and add a different perspective. Because I feel we have 46 students and probably just as diverse experiences in Poznan.
To be honest even though the professors have an accents I don't have a problem understanding them, they do a good job making their point across. This year we do have a small class and so far we have done a great job at being united, which i hope it stays this way. But realistically it's matter of time before we encounter difficulties, but let's hope we will be mature in resolving them. So fingers crossed for it to stay this way.

The school facilities itself, are top notch. I went to U of T, in Toronto Canada. which is close to 10 times bigger than Poznan, but I feel like poznan rivals, if not better at some things in respect to the facilities that they have and such. The library is gorgeous ( and opens until 12 during the week days! which is great!), great tennis courts, the new residence is beautiful. And even though are Histo lab is pretty disorganized, and sometimes feel useless. They are pretty high tech. There is like these big benches that have like 8-10 monitors one per each student and one microscope which connect to a big flat screen above each table ( so you can see whatever the person using the microscope is seeing). And there is like 8-10 of these benches it's pretty high tech. Even though we probably used those microscopes 2 or 3 times... but they are there. lol They are opening new Bio building too... not sure what that will be for. But it looks pretty modern.
I don't know, SO far my experience has been positive, things are a little disorganized and not very efficient, but they get done sooner or later. IN terms of academics the only tests we've had is histology... the questions are pretty dumb so i don't even care how well i do. I just want to pass. And I am just trying to learn the material in the book in hopes that whatever i do study i will have to know later for other courses, or the step. I feel like a lot of it will come back in every course. And once you have a good foundation the rest will be much easier.

Ooh one last very important thing about the reason why the school is not part of the direct loan thing in US. Well according to other students and the school, it seems that a lot of Taiwanese students, after the new law in their county came out that made it more difficult for them to come back. They decided to try US as an option and take the step 1, and were very unprepared for it. SO ended up bring down the school's average to a "74.5 % on step 1" (the threshold is 75). So the school was taken out of the direct loan system. But they are remedying this, by making it mandatory to accumulate a certain score during the NMBE exams in order to be allowed to take step 1. And it seems like this will be back to normal for next year. So hopefully it will be this way.

But I get a feeling that in this school your success is fully in your hands. And the biggest predating factor in how successful you'll be in coming back to North America is your motivation.

Anyways, I wish you all the best. Sorry to hear that you weren't able to join us this year!
    Cheers.

Totally agree with the previous post. Our class is really awesome and has a good group of hardworking people who mesh well.

You shouldn't let the FASFA thing deter you from applying because this is really a nice school and they are top notch as far as modern facilities from what I've seen. Have you looked into Sally Mae, that's what most of us US students did to fund this little adventure. The interest rates aren't atrocious and by the time you'll be admitted they may have the government loans all sorted out. (The school was really upset about the USMLE scores from what I can tell, and they lost a good few students from it).

    Hi StudentMed,
I saw some of Your post and I really appreciate the time You put in giving future students at PUMS the entire picture of the school.
I would like to ask You for advice about my chances of getting in. I am Wayne State student from Detroit, my gpa is 3.76, Bio major; science probably around this as well, but I sucked on MCAT this past May. I got 20, V6, P6, B8. I am retaking it late January, but I am thinking about chances of my application as of now. I really would like to have interview in December. What do You think, should I even bother applying? I've heard MCAT min. is 24.
I do have community service and volunteering experience, good LORs... but is it going to make up for MCAT bump?
Again thank You for time and consideration,
Good Luck and keep up in "KOLEJORZ"
    Loyally,
    Totti111

hello there, I am also from toronto and I am considering applying to Poznan for next sept for the 6 yr program. My concern is returning to toronto to practice, is this a concern, do you know how other people have managed? Another concern of mine is that I am not of polish background and I am sure I will find it extremely difficult to learn polish. Will I need to learn the language to get by? Thanks for your time.

There's a few people here from Canada. They all intend to go back so I don't see it as being a problem.

As far as knowing Polish, you'll be okay. They have mandatory Polish classes for all non speakers which helps a ton. You also pick up a lot just walking around....and most people do speak English.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but getting back in to Canada is a HUGE problem. Yes, there are many Canadians intending to go back but by far most of them will not. The statistics really speak for themselves, and unless your dream is to be a family doctor working in Winnipeg you shouldn't think of Canada as your first chance for employment if you come to Poland for med school. I'm not saying it's impossible - I personally know a few who have done it, but I wouldn't bet on it.
