Questions from an new student, 2011

    Advertisements

    Hi Everyone,

I will be joining Poznan this year and am really excited (and a bit apprehensive) about joining, so I have a bunch of questions.

    1. Out of curiosity, all those who lived in the dorms, how many used the kitchen facilities? Or do most people eat out?
    2. Where is the best place to buy bedding and towels? How much do they cost approx? What about things like soap and shampoo?
    3. What's the grocery store called? How far and expensive is it?
    4. Is there internet on campus…in the classrooms? Can we use the classrooms to study?
    5. What Banks do you guys usually use? What are the (dis)advantages of banks there? Anyone use Bank of America in the States, if so, how do you transfer/withdraw the money without any fee? If I want to set up an account before school starts as I might be arriving early, would that be possible or do I need a residency permit?
    6. Where can I buy a pre-paid SIM card on the way from the airport to the campus?
    7. Is here heating in the dorms? When do they switch it on? What about the classrooms and library?
    8. Are we allowed to use space heaters in the dorms? How expensive are they?
    9. What has the weather been like this past year? Has it been getting progressively more extreme like certain places in the states (as in colder winters and hotter summers each year)?
    10. Is there a place to take out printouts? How much is it per page?
    11. Does the library have a hole puncher we can use? Or should I carry a small one along with me?
    12. What format do the professors use to teach? Do they just lecture from a pile of notes in front of them, use transparencies, the blackboard/whiteboard, PowerPoint or a combination of them? Which prof uses which?

Also, which year is the schedule of classes on the ASG website of? And can someone post or send me a copy of the previous year's syllabi for each class. I would like to see how the topics are set up.

    Thank you!

    1. Out of curiosity, all those who lived in the dorms, how many used the kitchen facilities? Or do most people eat out?

    - I never have lived at dorms, but when I am at dorms someone is always using the kitchen. I would say it's 50/50 on cooking, and eating out. You tend to eat out more during exams since there isn't anytime to cook.

    2. Where is the best place to buy bedding and towels? How much do they cost approx? What about things like soap and shampoo?

    - Ikea, and then for soap/shampoo you can go to the supermarket. I think they give out stuff at dorms like cleaning supplies.

    3. What's the grocery store called? How far and expensive is it?

    - The closest grocery store is a 2min walk from dorms. It's called Piotr i Paweł (PnP), and it's decently priced. If you want cheaper prices, and bigger selection then you can go to Real or Tesco. There is also a store called Biedronka which is cheap, there is one located near the anatomy building, and another one near the apartments where all the students live.

    4. Is there internet on campus…in the classrooms? Can we use the classrooms to study?

    - Yes there is internet at dorms, and at the library. I don't think there is internet in classrooms, at least the ones I have class in don't have any.

    5. What Banks do you guys usually use? What are the (dis)advantages of banks there? Anyone use Bank of America in the States, if so, how do you transfer/withdraw the money without any fee? If I want to set up an account before school starts as I might be arriving early, would that be possible or do I need a residency permit?

    - If you have a bank of america account then you can withdraw money from Deutsche bank without a fee. Up until April 2011 they even gave you a very good exchange rate, but that all changed when Deutsche bank installed new bank machines.

    - As for banks in Poland, it's good to have an account I guess. I Would suggest either WBK (green bank), or Deutsche bank. You just need to show them you are a student, and maybe show them your Polish student visa.

    6. Where can I buy a pre-paid SIM card on the way from the airport to the campus?

    - You can buy one at the airport. When you walk out of customs at the Poznan airport go left and then make a right into this hall way with stores. Everyone uses Orange at school, so in the store ask for an "Orange starter". They cost from as low as 5pln to 100pln. Just make sure your phone from back home is unlocked or your new SIM won't work.

    7. Is here heating in the dorms? When do they switch it on? What about the classrooms and library?

    - Yes there is heating. They switch it on when it gets cold. Last year I think they switched it on end of October.

    8. Are we allowed to use space heaters in the dorms? How expensive are they?

    - Don't know really I never heard of anyone having one.

    9. What has the weather been like this past year? Has it been getting progressively more extreme like certain places in the states (as in colder winters and hotter summers each year)?

    - Every year is different tbh. This past year we had a short mild/cold winter, a warm/hot spring, and now apparently it's cold in July. The year before we had a bit of snow, and it was cold up until late March. The summer was extremely hot (no one has AC on top of that).

    10. Is there a place to take out printouts? How much is it per page?

    - Yes, there are many around the area. They are very cheap.

    11. Does the library have a hole puncher we can use? Or should I carry a small one along with me?

    - No idea. You can bring your own, but remember the paper size is different here, so buy an A4 hole puncher.

    12. What format do the professors use to teach? Do they just lecture from a pile of notes in front of them, use transparencies, the blackboard/whiteboard, PowerPoint or a combination of them? Which prof uses which?

    - Every prof. is different. Everything you listed is used. As for the profs I don't remember.

Past schedule's can be found on the school's website. Just go look under the program you are in and there are links to the schedules, and curriculum overview.

Thanks so much for the response Pharm!

I have a few clarifications and a few more questions. I would be most grateful if someone could help me out.

    1. Are the classrooms available for extra study space?

    2. Anyone who has a Deutsche Bank Acct- is there a minimum you have to keep in the acct? How's the service? And what is the approximate exchange rate they give for withdrawing money? I called the main new york branch and they had no clue.

    3. I was trying to start filling the resident permit form and had a few questions:
    a. I think that 'Rysopis' is asking for a body description....what are the appropriate answers to that?
    b. When they ask for special marks... is 'none' really 'none' in Polish, or should I be using a different
    word?
    c. My travel document is my passport, what should I put for series?
    d. What is the correct response for 'rationale of the application'?

    4. If the profs use powerpoint, do we get a copy?

    5. I only managed to get the syllabi for anatomy, first aid, and medical sociology. The others were either not available or had a password. I would really be grateful if I could get the rest of the syllabi.

    Thanks a lot!

    1. classrooms are only used for classes. You can either use the common room at dorms to study (1 room on each floor) or you can go to the library.

    2. minimum amount - nope
tbh i have an account there but i hardly use it, when i did service was great
They use to give bank of america customers sweet exchange rates but that is in the past, exchange rate changes every day so its hard to tell what they will give you, but expect it to be lower then the kantor

    3. Apply for Polish student visa, you will get it done faster, and you won't have to deal with Polish bureaucracy.

    4. Yes, most the time they will be available for download on the uni website

    5. I know that some of them are online, and the rest are given out in person. So you might have to wait till school starts to get the rest.

I have a few more Qs:

    1. Who are the profs for the first year? I couldn't find a definitive list on the website.

    2. My one luggage allowance (boo to the new airline regulations) seems to have filled up REALLY QUICKLY! I don't have much space/weight left and I was wondering if there is an affordable place close to the Uni where I can buy some flipflops/house slippers and winter gloves.

    Thanks!

Anybody know what proportion of the class is fluent in Polish already? Are most of the applicants to the English program Polish?
But if we hope for what we do not yet have, then we wait for it patiently.

    1. Under course info there is a list of all your classes and it under each class it will tell you who the main profs are.

    2. Yes we have 2 huge malls and tons of small stores where you can get anything you require.

I would say that maybe 10-20% of students come from a Polish background. Some of them know Polish fluently, some just have Polish roots.

Out of curiosity, all those who lived in the dorms, how many used the kitchen facilities? Or do most people eat out?
Most people eat out. Only certain dorms (Medyk) have ovens so sometimes cooking isn't as easy. But there are stoves in all of them. Food is cheap here as well so eating out isn't so bad.

Where is the best place to buy bedding and towels? How much do they cost approx? What about things like soap and shampoo?
There's an ikea 30mins away by bus and a mall maybe 15 mins walking which has stores with everything in it. There's also P&P which is right next to the dorms which has soap and everything. Again...Poland = Not expensive usually.

What's the grocery store called? How far and expensive is it?
    P&P see above answer.

Is there internet on campus…in the classrooms? Can we use the classrooms to study?
You can't use the class rooms to study, but the library is awesome and there are study areas in the dorms and in some the class buildings. To get internet you need to find someone with the code for that particular building. Depending on the building there's computers there for you to use.

What Banks do you guys usually use? What are the (dis)advantages of banks there? Anyone use Bank of America in the States, if so, how do you transfer/withdraw the money without any fee? If I want to set up an account before school starts as I might be arriving early, would that be possible or do I need a residency permit?
I don't have a bank here but lots of people like Deutsch bank they speak English and there are no fees for transferring money on line or taking money out (I think).

Where can I buy a pre-paid SIM card on the way from the airport to the campus?
There are stores in the airport I think that have them, but they may be cheaper at Kings Cross Mall in the Media Mart which is on the way to the dorms and a quick ride via taxi or bus. You could even walk...sometimes I think the planes are going to land on our dorm.

Is here heating in the dorms? When do they switch it on? What about the classrooms and library?
There's heat, it's awesome. They turn it on once it starts getting cold. Though some of the proffs seem to be going through menopause lately and keep opening all the windows up and it's freezing outside. lol.

Are we allowed to use space heaters in the dorms? How expensive are they?
There fairly expensive. No idea if you can use them, but you really don't need one.

What has the weather been like this past year? Has it been getting progressively more extreme like certain places in the states (as in colder winters and hotter summers each year)?
I heard this summer was cold, but it varies from year to year. It's been chilly here about 3 deg. C so deff bring a coat.

Is there a place to take out printouts? How much is it per page?
The library or a internet cafe, the price varies on what you're printing. The upper years could probably sell you a cheap printer though if you're really worried about printing and they're not so expensive at the media mart.

Does the library have a hole puncher we can use? Or should I carry a small one along with me?
I haven't seen one in the library yet. The paper here is a different size though it's a bit longer, so you may want to get the hole punch here if you're buying the paper here. Which also means getting the binders here because there are only two holes that are punched.

What format do the professors use to teach? Do they just lecture from a pile of notes in front of them, use transparencies, the blackboard/whiteboard, PowerPoint or a combination of them? Which prof uses which?
Chalk board and power point so far, but it depends on the proff. Most have power points but they are crazy about not letting you get copies of them sometimes. We've resorted to taking pictures of each slide and getting them that way. So a camera is a good thing to have.
