No idea as I haven't been yet, but I heard a current student say there's a gas station by the dorms that unlike most US gas stations has a coffee bar which might be open later than typical coffee shops.

    coffee shops

    Hey guys,

I'm a student here at PUMS now. There is a Starbucks at a mall that's about a 10-15 minute tram ride from here. Some people do go to study but as it gets colder, it's something you really don't want to do (or have time for, for that matter!).

There are no 24/7 coffee shops here, unfortunately. There is that gas station that is 24/7 that serves...decent...coffee. It's about a 3 minute walk from the dorms and about 1 minute from the new library.

Thanks for the details. Looks like everyone will have to create their own study heaven.

Do you live in the dorms? If you do, could you please give a brief overview of what they are like? Also, in terms of renting an apartments, what are the charges like. Is it easy to buy a car there too?

I did live in the dorms for about 3 months. I mean, they're small...can be loud depending on which one you have...and the kitchens are always dirty.

There is a new dorm called Karolek located about 1 minute away from Medyk/ Aspyrinka. I'm really not sure how they're going to arrange living situations there for incoming students. All the people I know who live there have their own rooms. Since it's brand new, it's much nicer and none of my friends have any major complaints (except noise). They are really really cracking down on the dorms though with respect to late night parties/ visitors/ etc.

My advice is to suck it up for at least the first semester or so. You'll meet people, get to know the area with everyone else, and be in the vicinity of other students who are very willing to help you. Then you can decide if you want to move out later.

I got an apartment with another girl in my class. We pay 2000zl/ month + 495zl administration fee. This translates to roughly $850/ mo. Our place is 73 square meters. I will tell you that we were extremely lucky and I don't know anyone else who lives where we do, has a place that big and pays that little. I think our saving grace was that we started looking in about November. Most students got a place right away, or within a month so prices were still very high.

You can expect to pay about that much for a 52- 60 sq. meter place--which by the way is still great.

Keep in mind that you will need a realtor and they will charge you 1 months rent; this is normal. There is really no other way of doing it unless you speak Polish. Also, you'll want something close to where everyone else, which is why a realtor is a good idea. They know what we (as students) are looking for. I have Polish speaking friends who live farther away from the dorms and it can get very lonely for them, being so isolated. The only other recommendation I have is to make sure you don't get pressured by any realtors to settle. I worked with one who was really trying to get me to increase my price (he was showing me places that were WAY out of my price range). THEN he tried to get me to live by myself because my roommate wouldn't budge on the budget. I ended up ditching him and going with someone else who found us exactly what we wanted. Definitely don't let anyone make you think there is nothing else out there and that you need to just settle---you might have to wait a little bit longer, but I'm sure you'll find something.

    Anything else??

Ok, I want to correct myself---firstly, there ARE places that are much much much cheaper than what we pay. I have some friends who have an ammaazing apartment very close to the city square. Its a 4 bedroom and they pay like... 275 USD/ month each. So yes, there are places out there. What I meant to say was that our place is very very modern and located right by the school facilities--which is why it's so much. ALSO I think for 52- 60 square meters, you can expect about 2200zl for 2 people (again this is close to school, library and grocery store).

Thanks a lot! That was really informative. There's been a couple of posts from Realtor about renting apartments on the board but I didn't want to jump in blind. I'm most likely going to make a short visit to the school sometime this summer and see for myself. If its anything like most college dorms and the bathrooms are clean I will stay there for the first semester. Thanks again, I'll send you a PM if I have any more questions.
