    Poland or Romania?

    Advertisements

    Hey everybody!

I'm a German student and would like to apply for admission into one of the 6-year MD programs either in Poland or Romania (or are there any other options I don't know about? ). After graduation, I would like to work in the US. I know that some Polish Medical Schools are approved by the California Medical Board and Romanian's aren't at all. On the other side, I read some bad things about Polish Medical Schools, e.g. that professors don't care for their students and that it is difficult.
    My questions:
    1. What would you suggest - Should I choose Polish or Romanian program?
    2. Also, is it true that after graduation one would have to do an extra year of practical training before being able to do the residency (in the Polish degree)?
    3. I am German - should I apply for the European or American program?
    4. Do students in Romania or Poland have free-time? I saw the schedules and they were full from 8.00am to 8.00pm. Students in Germany have lots of free time.
    5. My last option is to study something-health related in the UK or in the US for four years and then hope to (if I still want to) be able to get into one of the 4-year graduate programs in the UK. Otherwise, I'd have to apply for advanced entry in Poland.

    Thank you guys!

    Hey there,

Sorry for this late reply, but I would love to open up this conversation for future students!
I am a current student at a Polish MD school studying in English. I hope I can answer your questions directly

    1. What would you suggest - Should I choose Polish or Romanian program?

Look, I can’t say much about Romanian schools, but what you have heard of PL schools is correct. I suggest you look into some of my other posts for more info. As a German, I suggest ACTIVELY searching for a Med school is the west.

    2. Also, is it true that after graduation one would have to do an extra year of practical training before being able to do the residency (in the Polish degree)?

Yes this is true. It’s a complex situation with the LEK (final med school exam) that needs to be taken before starting residency. Many students start “residency” without the LEK, and everyone is unclear about that. Techically, that is an internship, which does not require the LEK, but the internship can last up to 2 years but you will go nowhere without that LEK exam! This is how it works in Poland, at least!

    3. I am German - should I apply for the European or American program?

Not sure what you mean. There is only the English-division program. What this is, is that the teachers take all the powerpoint presentations that they used for the Polish students are google translate them into English, as well as the exams.
There isn’t really an American program..you could take American medial exams, such as the NBME (subject exams for important preclinical courses), but these are not really utilized, at least not at my school (Medical University of Lodz)

There is a school in Krakow that is worth researching, since it is approved in the US. It is the only school worth looking into.

    4. Do students in Romania or Poland have free-time? I saw the schedules and they were full from 8.00am to 8.00pm. Students in Germany have lots of free time.

Nope. Loads of free time in Polish med schools. Only 1st, 2nd and 3rd years were packed with courses, but most of these just involve showing up..

I hope I was of some help.
Best of luck in everyone's future endeavors
