    A 26-year-old man participates in an exercise study. He is appropriately classified as sedentary, since his VO2max (maximum oxygen consumption) measured during conventional cycle ergometer exercise is 35 mL/kg/min. The exercise study he participates in utilizes a knee-extensor ergometer that limits exercise to the quadriceps muscles. The subject is given a 5-minute unloaded warm-up, followed by a graded maximal exercise test, and then by 30 minutes of knee-extensor exercise at 50% of the maximum work load.     I would go with
    B) Increase in Intracellular pO2


    interesting question....I am not sure though [IMG]/richedit/smileys/8.gif[/IMG] the warm up, exercise test and 30
    minutes of knee-extensor exercise...in the quadriceps.. is actively
    contracting, it is using more O2 , thus the PaO2 will be lower cause it's being used, and as PO2 decreases, Hemoglobin releases more O2 to the tissue.
    In addition, the contracting muscle is producing acid lactic,
    decreasing pH, and temperature during exercise increases, thus we
    have a right ODC which decreases SaO2 and unloads O2 to the working
    tissue.

    Cortez, could you please give the right answer?

    That is correct b/c in exercising muscle you are forming new vessels to increase supply of O2 and nutrients.

    hi

    Here we sole the question using each option given,
    Opt A. cant be the answer for it is to irrevent for the question asked.

    opt B most appropriate answer
    opt C mitochondrial density cant increase by excercising
    opt D myoglobulin is saturated too but B is the most fitting asnwer
    opt E can never happen in excersing conditions
