Interested in PA, what are my chances

    Advertisements

    Hi,

I am US citizen IMG. I am ECFMG certified (passed USMLE Step 1, Step 2CS, Step 2CK). I will be taking step 3 this year, because I just want to have my USMLE's completed.

Getting into residency has become soo competitive, and I had graduated in 2005 from medical school. I am interested in PA, because I believe I will get the work satistifaction in this medical field....with practicing clinically, being able to write prescriptions, the pay is good, and not bound to a particular field.

    My credentials:
*I grew up here (US Citizen), graduated from University in 2001, magna cum laude, gpa 3.7...received B.S. degree (major Biology & minor chemistry)

    *ECFMG certified, 2005 IMG

*Have hands on clinical experience in medical field through externships, clerkships in medical school.....also have observerships and was involved in writing for curriculumn for patients for state of Ohio.

    What are my chances?

And any schools accepting applicants to start this fall?

Thanks in advance for any input

I did not get high scores...my usmle scores are just pass

and its not strange actually....there are over 5,000 us citizen/green card holders medical graduates without residency......and around 1,000 are US medical school graduates

I am registered for example with findaresidency......there are really no spots....because too many medical graduates from U.S., Canada, England, and other foreign medical schools are applying

there is a physician shortage....but not enough residency spots to address that problem....because hospitals don't have money!! In fact 2 hospitals in NY area closed down last year because of this problem

PA is a good field to go too...because hospitals are trying to address problems with cheaper labor...with NP's and PA's...instead of paying a physician salary, I have seen that for example with psychiatry hiring more NP's with less physicians hired

Sad situation indeed! Not get off the subject, but I have always thought that our country should give us (US citizens) preferential treatment. For example, why do we treat the Canadians the same way we treat our US grads? They do not pay our taxes, heck they even accuse us of exporting guns and crime to them.

Residency spots should be filled by US grads (who are US citizens), then by IMG's (US citizen) first, and then the rest, especially most of these programs receive some type of state o federal funding paid for by our tax $. We need to change this and change it fast by pressuring our congress reps.

    Pa

Brenda u just dont understand. Our Hard Earned tax dollars pay for these programs and things are now changing. Program directors have annual meetings and last year i was fortunate to attend the one held in Atlanta,GA. The dad of a Recent Graduate from Ross stood up and spoke up and said how come my daughter passed all her boards and took $250K of U.S. dept of education and did not get a residency But some one who got the job was from india. How come my daughter cant go to india to practice but they can come here. All the Program directors Applauded him and many are distinguishing nowadays... So if u dont hold a U.S. visa or Greencard u will encounter many hurdles in getting residency cause now u not only have to impress them like U.S. citizens but you gotta impress them to the fact to sponsor you for a visa which many programs just dont do. So u need to get out from underneath ur rock.

I commend you for bringing this issue up on this board. Too many people are lured into going to a foreign medical school with no residencies at the end of the tunnel. I have a friend who got into Dermatology as a PA and makes over $100 k a year. Not bad for a 2 year investment. Finding a school should not be difficult. I believe PA schools have a universal application process as well. Just find one anywhere in the country and go STAT! Time is money and folks who sit around year after year waiting for a residency could have already graduated PA school.

    Good for you being proactive!

P.S. You may want to consider a PA school in Florida. This way you can moonlight as a "House Physician" while going through school.
