    Appendicitis vs diverticulitis

    Advertisements

    case:
    65 year old male develops periumbilical pain that localizes to the right lower quadrant. he has high temp and abdomen is tender

    q: what is the diagnosis?

    I said appendicitis and got this q wrong. I thought the main difference between diverticulitis and appendicitis besides the age is that diverticulitis presents with LLQ pain -

    appendicitis can affect elderly as well right?

    Appendicitis can occur in the elderly but the symptoms are going to be of lesser duration (pain will be mild and most will ignore it)... and by the time that they do see a doctor, there will be a mass in the RLQ meaning that it's perforated, and the pain would be more generalized; other signs/symptoms would include: absent or decreased bowel sounds; nausea; vomiting;

    Hope that this helps... please add or comment for more information... thank you
