    what are my chances

    Advertisements

    Hello,

I am going into my Junior year at a private college majoring in Biology. My current GPA is 3.1. Although right now my GPA is not high I was wondering if having extra curriculars will help my chances in getting into a D.O. school. I am the class president as well as a residence hall prefect. I am in the tri-beta honors society (biology honors society) as well am involved with much of the campus ministry service work. Furthermore, I have done shadowing at hospitals thus far and have done service trips to Brazil and India. Do I have a chance on getting into a D.O. school such as Lecom?

Also, I can still bring my GPA up, what will I have to bring it up to by the time I apply? The reason for such a low GPA is due to a slow start freshman year.

    Thanks

I wouldn't know off the top of my head, but you can check out some school stats for DO Schools on doapplicants.com

I believe LECOM is listed there. Since you are so active in pursuing your medical profession I think you more than make up for a slightly lower GPA than required. You are not dealing with robots; the admissions people can filter more intelligently.

    Good luck!

DO schools definitely have a reputation for looking at the "whole applicant" -- so all of your extra stuff will make a difference. Of course, it goes without saying that you should bring that GPA up as much as you can between now and graduation. Also, make sure that you get some clinical observations (and a letter) from a practicing DO, as that speaks volumes with many DO admissions committees. If you can score really well on the MCAT you will be in even better position. Apply to as many DO programs as you can, and go from there. Good luck to you! I have a number of friends who are DOs in practice and residency, and they are very happy with their career choice.

    hi guys,

I am currently nearing graduation from University of Toronto and my AACOMAS sGPA is a 3.07 with cGPA of 3.00. I took the MCAT last year and got a 29O. I also have 2 really good reference letters and can get one from a physician with whom i volunteered extensively. In total, i have approximately 250 hours of volunteer work and my last 2 academic years have a gpa of 3.5+. What would you think are my chances for acceptance into the lower end DO schools like Touro College in NY, William Carry or Lake Erie?

    I appreciate the help
