Ross U. Founder Establishes a New Offshore Nursing School

    by GOLDIE BLUMENSTYK

Five years after he sold the eponymous Ross University, to two investor groups, which then sold the institution to DeVry Inc., the 87-year-old founder of the medical and veterinary school is getting back in the medical-education business with a for-profit college of nursing.

Robert Ross is building his new International University of Nursing on 10 oceanfront acres on the Caribbean island of St. Kitts, just a quarter mile from the Ross University veterinary-school campus there. (The Ross medical school is located in Dominica.)

Mr. Ross expects to begin the first trimester of classes for 50 to 100 students by the middle of May. Eventually, he says, he hopes to enroll 500 students per trimester. Students will take three trimesters at the school and then complete their associate degrees at U.S. institutions that have agreed to accept them. So far, the university has formed an affiliation with one institution, Kilgore College, a community college in Texas.

Mr. Ross says he is investing about $20-million to develop the new institution. "I'm doing it for my children," he says. His two sons and two daughters were administrators at Ross University and will manage the new college.

Mr. Ross sold most of his interest in Ross University to the two investor groups in 2000, reaping more than $100-million. He received a bit more for his minority stake when the groups turned around three years later and sold the institution to DeVry, for $310-million.

The new nursing school isn't accredited, but Mr. Ross has been in discussions with the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission. The commission does not yet have authority to accredit nursing schools outside the United States, but it is seeking such permission. Kilgore is accredited by both the nursing body and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

    ...

is this the best news I have ever heared.I am tired of reading everywhere about the nursing shortage and from my personal experiences a hospital rather lose a doctor before they lose a nurse because its hard to replace them[nurses]

Dr...have contributed significantly to US heathcare...its time to honor the man.
