% chances of students moving onto md1 from premed

    Advertisements

    Hey everyone,
Unfortunately Texan medguru left and he said that we need a 3.0 gpa to get into md1. Does anyone know the success rates of moving from premed to md1 (a rough percentage) and can anyone post me on their premed experience.

My stats which got me into premed: 2.5 gpa, 20 mcat, took all the sciences (physio, anatomy, orgo 1 and 2, advanced orgo, biochem 1 and 2, cell bio, molecular bio, genetics, etc.

Here is what the official promotions guidelines are.
CRITERIA FOR ACCEPTANCE INTO THE M.D. PROGRAM
    1) Must complete the entire Pre-Medical program in two semesters.
    2) Must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and be “in good standing, not on academic or disciplinary probation.”
    3) Must be recommended for matriculation to the Basic Science program by the pre-medical faculty.
CRITERIA FOR DISMISSAL FROM THE PRE-MEDICAL PROGRAM
    1) Any student who fails (F or WF) in any Pre-Medical course will be dismissed.

    2) Any student who does not complete or fails a “repeated course” will be dismissed.

Any student who fails to meet any of the above criteria will not be allowed acceptance in to the Basic Science program and must formally re-apply for admissions in order to be reconsidered.
Normally everyone makes it through, some don't.

If you have already had the courses, you may consider retaking the MCAT and see if you can up that score and ask them to reconsider, by looking at your GPA, is the main reason for not going directly to MED, administration really does want you to succeed, so they must feel its the best place for you.

The person who interviewed me told me that usually 85% of the students make it through to Basic Sciences.

yup!...the stats r right!....Most of the students make it through!...with the exception of the 'special' ones that either dont take it seriously or the ones that preety much dont care at all!...

Right now for May 2011 ....out of around 30 students in the premed 2 class (not sure of the exact #)...3 failed..and the rest are all in MEd 1!...and yes.,..if u fail a class in premed 2...ur OUt!...

Speaking of the 3.0 GPA needed to get to Med 1....it is 'Cumulative'...bascially meaning...ur GPa for premed 1 and premed 2...should be an overall 3.0 or higher!....is it possible/??..Hell ya it is!!...The point is to do well in premed 1...with a higher GPA...and then in Premed 2...you have a cushion...coz all u need is an overall 3.0 and higher!....

So yea...gud luck guys...im sure u all will do well!...Just dont let anyone tell u the prmed program is easy or extremely tough!...coz if u put in the work...u Shuld be able to do relatively well in all the classes!...

From your experience were the chemistry courses really hard? What happens if you fail a course in pre-med 1 ... does the student get dismissed?

Are there resources/tutorials available to pre-med students outside of class if they need help with understanding the material?
