Is MUA-N Premed Program Right for me? Is it "Legit"?

    Advertisements

    A) I was hoping people could help me clarify a few things to see if MUA-N is a good for me. I am a recent 2009 graduate with B.S. Biology. Unfortunately my overall gpa 2.6/science gpa 2.3 is very poor for any caribbean school. I have not taken the MCATs either.... What are my chances in getting into MUA-N premed program?????? Are there other qualified premed programs I should know about?

    B) In addition, if I were to be accepted into the premed program and continue to graduate the MD program and pass USLME, etc, will I have any problems to practice back in the United States (NY particularly) because I took this unique track to get a doctorate? Will all the hard work at MUA-N be recognized or thrown out the window? I'm not interested in the Bachelors the premed program offers just the aftermath of the premed program.

Everyone is welcome to answer one or both. Thanks for your time and patience.

hey man, i noticed while being on this site that your cgpa and science gpa are very close to mine. i also understand that you got into premed as well so congrats first off. I am also in the process of applying for premed to various carib unis. I was wondering what kind of things did you do to help your chances of getting accepted into premed. ill be honest i do not have a shot at the top4 caribb, i am looking for a fresh start and realistically looking at St. james, windsor, mua-nevis, AUA, and all the so-called "lower-tiered" caribb schools.
    lemme know.

    thx!

hey iMD. A fresh start is a great mind set for you and your goals. I do not know if these helped my chances of getting accepted but I did have lots extracurricular activities, volunteer experience, and I was very honest on my poor academic performance. In addition, I was very meticulous with my personal statement. I hope these help. good luck!

Hey guys, I just got into premed for sept 2010. How are you finding the program so far? Is it super challenging? I didn't do so well in chem so I am a bit concerned..maybe I should just do my pre req courses here in Canada..I'm still not sure about the progrm. I am hearing that they accept a lot of people simply because they know more than half cannot maintain their grades in the program. Is this true?

First congrats on the acceptance. So far the program is doable and slow at the moment. However, this program is meant for only a select group of people. Our class is only about 25 so that is not a lot of people as you said. This program will gradually become more difficult so that only a select few can move onto Med 1. On a good note, for those who have taken the premedical program, they have done considerably well compared to their counterparts who started at Med 1.

I my opinion, I would suggest that you complete as many prereqs as you can at home and earn your degree before attempting this so that you can fall back on that. Having some background in chem would be helpful. I believe you can always defer your acceptance for a later semester. gluck.

Even though I truly believe that MUA premed program is v. good (I know people who went through it, and later did very well in the MD program), by all mean you should save your money and just go to a Jr. college where you live for almost free, retake the premed classes and maybe a couple of advanced classes (i.e. Biochem, Cell bio, etc), that way you can improve your GPA, and perhaps take the MCAT, you never know, you may do well enough to make it to a DO school or one of the big 5.

    Just my 2c's.
    Good luck!

I am seriously considering this program and was wondering if you have any updates as to how its going? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
