    Cell service

If anyone has an unlocked cell phone and want to buy my sim card PM me. That way when you get to Nevis you won't have to deal with cable & wireless or digicel, you'll have a working number ready.

It should be noted to new students that Digicel offers cell phones and sim cards at the beginning of the term for free with a 10EC credit. The phone comes precharged and is pay as you go. You can start using it right after you get it and has a local phone number.

last term you just had to go to Rawlands dorm or the cafe (at certain times) to pick it up for free; I think they do this at the beginning of every term.

cmy, you might be right regarding the possibility that Digicel could have had a promotion for the 09.07 class but speaking from experience, it was a couple of days before school started, the Digicel and C&W people came to the dorm and started handing out free phones and all they asked for was a valid driver's license........I didn't really feel it was a promotion, it looked like they did that on a regular basis..........

    Anyway just my $0.02

Since I first arrived on this island, both Digicel and CW have been giving out free phones every semester. Yes it does seem like they do it every semester as a promotion for new students. They both come to the dorms and hand out phones, there are NO headaches, you just show and ID and they give you an activated pay as you go phone with 10EC credit. This semester, for the students that missed them at the dorms, they were able to go to town and get them from the store. Of course this is all while supplies last, so its a first come first serve kinda thing.

most students on this island have both. Its pretty expensive to call to canada from these phones. I am not sure of the rates though. I think its 1EC/min.

I paid for mine, $20 US indeed. Do you think that Med 5 girl pocketed the money? LOL... That is possible...
Skype is another option to call back home. Even if you have vonage you still need a cell phone for daily communications.

Cell phones on the island are pre-paid...and there are usually "Double Bubble" promotions with C&W (bMobile), so calls end up costing around 20c (EC) for in-network, or 30c for other lines, if I remember correctly (though it can add up). Have you guys heard of MagicJack? It's pretty nice - it's like Vonage, but ~$3/month ($40 for the first year, $20 for years thereafter). Only catch is that it plugs into your computer, so your phone is "off" whenever your computer is off. (Website is magicJack?)
