Hopkins residency program cited for work hour

    Advertisements

In its first major move to penalize institutions for
violating new resident work hour rules, the
Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education
(ACGME) has cited the internal medicine residency
program at Baltimore's Johns Hopkins University. The
ACGME informed Hopkins that the program would lose its
accreditation as of July 1, 2004.

The action came after the ACGME investigated a
resident's report that first-year residents were
scheduled to work more than 80-hour weeks in early
July, according to the Aug. 27 Baltimore Sun. The new
ACGME rules mandating an 80-hour workweek for
    residents took effect July 1.

Hopkins officials, who claimed the scheduling
violations had been corrected, are negotiating with
the ACGME to retain the program's accreditation. The
Aug. 27 Washington Post said that at least some of the
violations were related to averaging the number of
nights that residents were on call in the intensive
    care unit.

According to the Baltimore Sun, residents in as many
as 10 other institutions have reported violations
since July to the ACGME, which is now investigating
    those reports.

Sources quoted by the Baltimore Sun also said they
believed the ACGME wanted to move against a
high-profile institution like Johns Hopkins to show
that there is no need for federal or state legislators
    to regulate resident work hours

    UNfortunate

The thing that I find unfortunate is that there is little incentive to report your own program if they are not following the rules. If your program loses its accreditation, then where does that leave you, as a resident??? G

    yep

i was thiking the same thing, maybe they can slap them with a hefty fine instead?

also is there any retaliation to the residents that report them?

another q...how come they dont set up some kind of punch card/time clock system...so it can electronically moderate the work hours. and they dont have to rely on snitches. i mean my xgf worked at kmart and they typed in a PIN number before and after work, and they kept track of them like that.

Haha. A state of the art hospital with a cruder work monitoring system than Kmart.

    I think Its Great

These high profile residencys think they rule the world. There is nothing better than slapping them with a citation. I am not only saying it should be the "Ivy" residencys who are cited, but they seem to be the ones who can push people around.

This 80 rule was developed for a reason; for the protection of the residents and patients. Falling asleep while doing exam is not cool in my book.

Maybe the boad will make some examples of these hospitals, and other will begin to realize that a rule is a rule. If they do not like it, than they do not have to be a teaching hospital!

'weird' is an understatement from what I heard. His identity is far from secret anymore. Either way, bravo to him and I'm glad things worked out for him elsewhere.

Screw these programs that think rules aren't for them.

You can imagine the dilemma of the other residents. In a way, the guy helped them, but he jeopardized the standing of their program, and thus his own and their futures. G
