    Water for ER Patients?

    Advertisements

Okay, so no blankets for patients with fever but how 'bout water. I was sitting with a man one night who was dying and bleeding internally and the nurses wouldn't allow me to give the poor man a sip of water.

Having worked in an ER for 7 years, no one gets water until they are medically cleared - either because they may need surgery, or they may need a diagnostic test where their stomach must be empty.

For your patient, since he was bleeding interally, my guess is that they were going to take him to the operating room, and by giving him anything by mouth, you would be delaying the surgery 6-8 hrs. Not a good idea if the patient is critical.

But the swab to moisten the mouth is generally acceptable and a good idea...

Though out of curiosity, what does this have to do with moonlighting? Because that is the forum that this is posted in...

    No connection - Sorry

Thank you for your response. This topic has nothing to do with moonlighting. I apologize. We got off track last night.
