    Clarifications on Meal/Rent costs

    Advertisements

    Hello guys,

I was wondering if someone can clarify for me the approximate costs of meals and rent in the Island for a month. My friend who's there now said to me that the combined cost of rent and food per month would be $1000. Do you think this is correct? I'm not a big fan of food and usualy I eat 2 meals per day. Although, I don't really know the reality on the Island, my guess is that I won't need to spend more than $400/month on food. I would appreciate if anyone can give me the scoop on this. Thanks in million kids.

    Regards

    Meals/Rent

I've been on Nevis since January. Before my wife and kids arrived at the end of May, I would spend about $125 US for food per week. That was eating cereal for breakfast, a sandwich for lunch, and a meal of some sort for dinner. I would guess you couldn't do it for less that $100.

As far as rent, that depends on what you are including in rent. Rent alone will be between $350 and $600, depending on how nice of a place you want. If you run A/C, utilities will run over $100. Cable, about $35-40, Phone and internet, $65-100 depending on how may calls you make.

Adding all this together comes to around $1,000 if you are conservative. Keep in mind on the food that everything has to be shipped here. They don't grow any of their own food, so it costs you about 2 to 3 times what it would in the states.

    Ol'man is the man :)

Thanks Ol'man. Your post realy shed some light on my concern. You said the total cost would be $1000, so does that mean with three meals like you had or less? If let's say I eat three meals/day, and live in a oky house with others, and no cable and internet do you really think the $1000 would be enough for a month? I'm not a tv person and about the internet I'm hoping to focus on my books and if I need one to use the school internet.

    thanks again for your help

    $1000

I'd say if you are frugal, $1,000 a month is do-able.

Cable, I'd say do without. Internet, I'd recommend you have. You're going to have classes where you have research on the net, and it is a pain to have to do it in the library, depending on their net.

Also, I assume people have told you but you need to bring a laptop or ship a desktop down. Get the best you can afford. Saving 300 or 400 dollars on a computer is not worth it. Also make sure you have a pen drive (256 or 512).

Thanks Ol'man. Your info realy helped me alot.

for the internet, do I have to get home phone line or they have cable line? because I was hoping to get a cell phone since all incoming calls are free 24/7. If I have to get home line for the internet, then I guess I would have to forget the cell phone as it'll be expensive to pay two bills. If you don't mind asking you, how much were you paying both the internet and phone each month?

    thanks always,

    Phone and internet

Cable and wireless charges about $30 EC for regular service. Unlimited internet is $75EC plus a $0.20 connection fee for each connection. With dropped connections, you will be paying about $110 total for dial-up. They do have cable internet now, supposedly island wide, but I don't know anything about it. I will probably check on it next semester, since its supposed to be comparable to dial-up in cost and a lot faster in speed.

    Phone and internet

Well if you get DSL then you would need a land line, if you decide to go with cable then you would need both cable tv and cable internet and no land line.

Right now the DSL is cheaper than Cable since they droped their prices, I'm paying $149EC for 512kb download which is really nice since I can you this for both net and using my vonage.

As far as expenses go for rent, food....etc $1000 is reasonable and always think high not low, so that way you won't be surprised.
