Failed comp 3x at Medical University of the Americas, withdrew myself.

So I failed comp for 3rd time back in April of 2015 at MUA. Instead of being admin withdrawn, I went ahead and withdrew myself. I passed all 5 semesters, and the only thing I did not pass was the comp exam. Several family health issues arose in between last year and half, which prompted me to take a step back from medicine. Now I am in the process of applying to transfer to another carribean school. What are some recommendations for carribean schools that would be able to sponsor me to either take Step 1 directly, or take the comp exam again, and proceed to step 1. Just trying to find a good direction moving forward.

I know UMHS and Windosr take credits. UMHS makes you take a kaplan course thing which you have to pass and then you write the step, I don't think they have comp . With Windsor you have to write a comp and get a 60 and then can write the step1.

From what I have heard these are lower tier schools and switching school kinda puts a red flag on your application during residency but I have also heard of students that did stellar on the exams and matched. Obviously the match to the competitive residency is low to begin with when coming from a caribbean school and essentially becomes 0 when you go from AUC to a lower tier carib school but I have heard that a match in primary care is possible.

    Good luck!

Sorry to hear that. It is always difficult dealing with family health issues and studying. I had family health issues as well and can relate to how it sucks.Despite distractions, not passing the comprehensive exam is a red flag. Passing classes and passing a standardized exam are totally different. When applying for residency people care about your step scores and not your medical school grades. Family health issues or other time consuming stuff donít always go away and can impact you later on, on anther exam. If you failed the comp 3 times you likely will have a problem with step 1, step 2 ck, step 3, residency based exams and your licensing exam. The comp is a predictive exam on how you will do on step 1, which has a high level of sensitivity. Considering that, you should reconsider if you want to continue the physician path or do something else and cut your losses. I have had a few friends in your position (failing the comp, transferring schools) that continued on in medicine. One guy match into residency after 3 years of applying while working for them for free during that time; he is the best case senario. He still needs to make it through residency, people can fail that as well, although that is uncommon. Others never got into residency because they either are not getting interviews or they are stuck trying to pass step 2 ck, after 5-6 years of being a medical student. Something to consider

Hi, I know it's been a little while since you posted this but I wanted to follow up and see what progress you've made since posting this. I have a close friend in an identical situation as this and just wanted to see what the potential options are.
