    MUA acceptance

    Advertisements

Hi. I am finishing Pre-med program from a Caribbean Med School. But my GPA is 2.5. My MCAT score is horrible. My High school GPA is 3.7. I was wondering what are my chances of getting into MUA Basic Science Program.

did you do premed at MUA?

It is possible to get in but i think your chances would be low. The admissions coordinator would be best to answer that.

More importantly, you need to consider if medicine is right for you. With Low GPA from a premed program and a low mcat score you run a high risk of never finishing medical school and having problems passing the usmle step 1. That exam is a major roadblock for weaker students. Those that pass it after a few times writing it find it exceptionally difficulty to get into any residency program. Without residency your medical degree is not very helpful. You can easily spending the next 4-7 years trying to finish medical school and never end up practicing as a physician. It is a horrible position to be in. I am a MUA graduate who is nearing the end of residency training and I say this from having a couple friends who are in the position I mentioned. It was not MUA that made them unsuccessful, but rather they were not cut out for medicine.

Do you recommend me completing a masters degree before applying to MUA, or simply try to nail the MCAT first and see if I can get in. My overall GPA will be about a 3.0 even at the end of this semester, and a 2.7 science GPA. I'm already a post bacc student, but my undergrad loans are gone now....only eligible for graduate.

low chances. Try after grad school. I know people who got in with an MCAT of 21. The school is getting harder to get into each semester--- they may end up asking you to complete two semesters of pre-med. Undergrad gpa of 2.7 isn't IMPOSSIBLE. You should try.

I got accepted for the MD program in May 2017!

I would recommend any of the above responses. I ended up doing tons of clinical work and retook some classes to beef up my GPA. I also retook the MCAT and got a pretty good score. Work at it and all will be well.
