    Top Dorm Choices

    Advertisements

    Hello everyone,

I'm a May 2012 premed and trying to figure out what the best dorms to live in are. I understand 'best' may be subjective, but which dorms typically fill up first and what are the advantages of living on and off campus? Also when is a good time to pay the semester's tuition if I'm looking to get a single room?

Congratulations on your acceptance, if your looking for a single room, that is only potworks dorms, none of the dorms are actually on campus. There are some single apartments in potworks as well and a new building across from the school on the main road, under 10 min walk. Potworks is about a 5 minute walk. Some students find it nice to get a dorm room, and be close to other classmates, some find it better to start out in non-dorms so they dont have to move at the end of the semester. Dorms are for only your first semester. Usually the non-dorm units around the island are furnished, and have full kitchens, the dorms do not have kitchens, only like a hotplate, small refridge and microwave. Hope that helps, also search the forum for lots of othere posts on this subject. Check out this one, good info. http://www.valuemd.com/medical-unive...nevis-mua.html

Thanks Sharky! Do you happen to know what the name of the new building is called? I'm a particularly picky person when it comes to living situations, but having a new building that close to the school is enticing. I don't mind moving at the end of the semester and I think that living in dorms and near campus my first semester will be better for me academically while I adjust to island life.

The building across from the school I don't believe has a name, I was asking a student about it and he said the place is rented for like a year in advanced, they are building a second one, I would guess that is already full too. Living near the school and in the dorms your first semester is a good thing, there will be plenty of other things for you to concentrate on. I will keep asking around and see if I can find an email or phone number for the places close.

Looking at the housing list from the MUA campus website, I see so many apartment complexes that I do not know where to start. I noticed that the apartment complex on "Machmans Rd" is said to be close to Best Buy, so I think that I will visit this apartment complex when I visit Nevis in November. Therefore, I wanted to know how far in walking distance is this apartment complex from MUA. Also, do buses go from this apartment complex to the school? If so, how long is the drive?

Hi, I looked at the housing list as well, The Machmans rd place being close to best buy is not 10 minutes for school, more like at least 20-25. Best buy is either downtown, or in Gingerland. Here is a link to a map that may be helpful, it doesnt have every area listed, but some are. Nevis Map & Guide | Skyviews Maps and Travel Guides
West of school areas, Barnaby, camps, Mt. Lily, Rawlins and Rawlins pasture, Fountains, Nesbits, Newcastle, then the airport in Newcastle, further away would be Cotton Ground, Ouilie, Cades Bay, and Jessups.
East of school areas, Bricklins, Butlers, and Zion.

Your first semester the school provides bus services, if you want you can catch an "H" (hire) bus, they travel around the island on the main road, there is no set schedule, walk to the main road and wait till 1 passes in the direction you want to go. Depending on where your going costs about $1.5US.

There are only a few places in walking distance to the school, I don't see any of those listed on the housing list, mainly cause they fill up and stay full all the time (most desirable). Once you get here most students make friends and share cars, catch rides with someone going to town or shopping.

Send an email to Housing@mua.edu with specific questions and she probably can provide pictures as well.

Don't think I really have a choice, as its going to be my first semester. I think I'd prefer dorms my first semester anyway, just to get acclimated to the island.
