Bringing your fragile but bulky stuff

    Advertisements

    Hey all.

I will be moving down there for January, but I am concerned. How on earth did you guys bring things like printers and other bulky appliances like toasters and hotplates? If I check them in in my luggage, or ship UPS or something, I am quite sure they will be broken by the time they are tossed over to Nevis. Even if it is shipped as "fragile", its kind of a big risk to send something like a printer and then not have it work when classes begin. So for those who have done this, how did you guys deal with this issue?

Also, in the event my functional printer or computer or something breaks down while on the island, is there anything one can do to quickly replace them or fix them? Or are you kinda just stuck?

    Thanks!

Hi, There isn't an easy way to get things to the island, other than boxing it safely by placeing lets say the item in original box in a larger box then pack around it with soft thing like sheets, towels, extra clothing, then use a freight company that would use ocean freight to get it here. Usullay takes about 3 weeks from Toronto, however take into consideration that it will be the holiday period so it might take longer with closed offices. If you do some searching, you will find some posts on who they used to ship items.

You also brings things over time, if you go home for breaks be between semesters.

As for printer or computer repairs, the school IT guy does a great job at keeping them going. If your concerned about something happening, there are 2 factory service centers one is Dell and one is Lenovo, you will need to purchase an international warranty (extra cost) and also a new computer (more costs). If your computer goes bad and can it can't be made to work, you would have to ship it off to home and then they would have to send it off for repairs, then send it back, roughly $200 or more in shipping alone.

The IT guy has a decent selection of things needed, printers, new laptops, external hard drives, head phones, chargers, internal hard drives, dvd, cd, routers, mouse, flash drives, and other things all at reasonable prices.
